Had a wonderful time at the Old Dominion Poultry Show Spring Fling yesterday! Some fabulous breeders were there and how awesome to see everyone!
My birds did well for themselves!

White Crested Black Bantam Cockerel (1st place, both cards)
White Crested Chocolate (1st Place Reserve Variety in 1 Show, 2nd in the other)
White Crested Black Bantam Pullet (Best Variety)

I’ve shared this before, but here’s a friendly reminder/advice for anyone struggling with keeping a rooster… THIS WAS A TOTAL GAME CHANGER! 🐓✨

There are actually a lot of benefits to having a rooster. He helps keep the peace among the ladies and is fiercely protective of the flock. But after a while, I got pretty tired of the surprise attacks and not being able to sit and enjoy time with the hens. 😅

So… I did something about it.

Now it’s part of our daily routine. First thing in the morning, I place a basket over him and toss him a few treats. With him safely occupied, I can take my time tending to the ladies, visiting with them, and collecting eggs in total peace.

When I’m finished, I simply guide him (still under the basket) over to the door and release him as I step out. Easy, simple, and stress-free.

Absolute game changer! 🙌

And the best part? Brad is still thriving and doing his job like a champ. He keeps his flock happy and safe — and at 11 years old, he’s still going strong! 💛🐔

Let's talk for a minute abt STRESS in our birds and in ourselves. How are they related? Well, we can't take care of our birds if we don't take care of ourselves for one thing. For another, birds are HIGHLY sensitive to our moods. If you're trying to clean that coop and you're yelling & cussing you need to STOP....and breathe. Sit down and settle your nerves for a minute. Your birds pick up on your state of being and mirror it. If you're a basket case, they will be too. Talk to them. Birds react to our voices. For example, I love to laugh & now, so do my birds! A lot of my birds laugh. A lot. Lol. Why? I laugh a lot. They hear me & mimic it. I find Polish to be so hilarious and beautiful they make me laugh. They give me joy. Be joyous around them. They love it and they respond to it! My birds tend to be gentle and good natured. Why? Because I am gentle and good natured with them.
Stress kills us. Stress causes ulcers and migraines and heart attacks every single day and more. Stress affects them just as much as it does us. If you show you have seen first hand...a bird is fine at home. Wash it, pack it up and show it..bring it home...dead. At home it's fine...sell it and a week later it dies for no apparent reason. Everything we do and everything we dont do matters. Do your best to practice strong prevention and keep your birds as healthy and happy as possible and be mindful of stress. Be mindful of your state of mind around them and watch how it affects them.
Play some music! Sing to those babies! Enjoy them!Let's kick this year off with as little stress as possible for ourselves and our flocks.
