There are 15 rabbit breeds on The Livestock Conservancy’s Conservation Priority List, several of which were developed in the United States. All heritage breed rabbits are genetically valuable with unique, desirable traits and it takes the hard work of dedicated breeders to ensure the survival of these breeds for the future!

It has been a rough winter for our livestock this year. Unfortunately we had not only bunny losses but chicken losses too. Mostly my pure silkies (I have 3 mixes left). They’ve done great in winters past so I don’t know why this year was so different.

That said, I am happy to announce we once again have pure silkies on the farm thanks to one of our sister farms, Momma Dragon's Homestead. There are 9 white and 1 pretty little splash. Plus a pretty half silkie hen that is the daughter of our sweet (former) silkie roo Bo and one of our Americauna hens lol.

Did you know that all domesticated rabbit breeds on The Livestock Conservancy’s Conservation Priority List descended from the wild European rabbit? Recent findings indicate these wild rabbits evolved on the Iberian Peninsula and southern France around 2 million years ago, before spreading throughout the Mediterranean region thanks to Roman and Phoenician seafarers.

With three adult Pilgrim goose girls, and two Chinese geese (with at least one being a girl), the ladies have gone from first egg to egg-splosion in short order. Currently Joanna and Maria are sitting on nests.

If you have been wondering what’s been going on here at the farm, let me just say that it’s been a lot. Farm life has been crazy chaotic this past month and a half. First we had the PASRBA rabbit show at the beginning of February (So much fun!) then we got a couple weeks rest before one of our sister farms started inexplicably losing rabbits at an alarming speed. Recently got the necropsy results back from the vet and it turned out to be complications from hay contaminated by coccidia spread by wild rabbits. A complete fluke of misfortune lost well over 30+ young rabbits, including our 3 Creme d’Argent buns purchased at Christmas, a beautiful new French Lop buck we picked up at the show, and our last Noodle (Satin Angora) kit. Three weeks of losing bunnies took a huge toll on all of us. In that time we have been trying to get the goose run finished, got surprised with a new flock of silkie chicks after losing our last 4 this winter (2 during the bunny disaster), and we have welcomed a few new bunny litters. I’m also waiting very impatiently for my chickens to start laying regularly again. Oh, and we’ve been working on getting a sweet rescue bun back to health. It’s been bonkers. Have some fun photo updates that can’t even begin to capture the past 6-7 weeks.
