Unfortunately 2026 continues to be one of the most heartbreaking years on the farm. Today we discovered that our French Lop matriarch, Beanie, had somehow broken or severely injured her spine and we had to help her cross the rainbow bridge. Everybody who met her loved her and she will be dearly missed. She started out as my tiny little shoulder bunny runt, my tiny little coffee bean, and grew into one of the biggest cuddle bugs and best mamas we’ve ever had. I love you Beanie.

After this year’s major loss of hens to the local raccoons, we decided it was finally time to add a LGD to the farm. After a bit of searching for the right dog we found a lovely 5 year old Maremma girl called Annie. She is so far a sweet, mellow girl that I think will be a good fit for us. She’s already experienced with chickens and other poultry and seems curious about the rabbits.

TLDR: Does anybody have leads on chicken and waterfowl savvy livestock guardian dogs?

Unfortunately the yearly “tradition” of losing chickens to raccoons has started. Their new trick this year is busting into the coop at night instead of just picking them off during the day. We have lost 4 in two days and they were all favorites. Needless to say, we are devastated and trying to plan out new ways to keep the birds safe. So far the best long term solution seems to be investing in fencing around the birds’ yards/runs and a livestock dog. If anybody has any suggestions on breeds that are specifically good with poultry, or even availability of LGDs please let me know.

Today has been a rough one...we have 6 little orphan cremes we are hoping will make it through. We checked them all yesterday night and everyone seemed fine. This morning momma had passed 😔 we're not sure what happened but are leaning towards heart attack. These guys are just shy of 4 weeks so still pretty early to be away from mom. But we're gonna do our best for them 💖 I'm sorry little ones
