“Found this in an old Camp Go for Beer logbook from ’58. Some things never change. Here’s to the hunters who paved the way.”

November 24, 1958
Got him. 8:15 this morning, down by the old creek bed. Twelve points, heavy. Sat froze for three hours, and then he stepped out. One shot from the .30-30.

My Red Plaid’s still warm. Dad’s Wi******er’s still true. Coffee in the Stanleys' is still hot.

Took my cap off when I walked up to him. Said a quiet thanks. Same as Dad taught me in ’46. Same as I’ll teach my boy.

This is deer camp.
No radio. No fuss. Just timber, tracks, and the kind of quiet that sticks to your ribs.

We’ll be back at it tomorrow before sunup.
Soup’s on at six. Beer’s cold in the snowbank.

P.S., Joe, you owe me a bottle for that heater you “borrowed” last night.

Wisconsin hunters: you have until Sunday, May 31 to apply for a chance at a 2026 elk hunting license. Selected applicants will be notified in early June.

Wisconsin residents can submit elk license applications online through the Go Wild license portal or in-person at a license sales agent. The application fee is $10 for each of the bull elk and antlerless elk drawings and is limited to one application per person, per authorization type. All applicants should check and update their contact information to ensure contact with successful applicants.

For each application fee, $7 goes directly to elk management, monitoring and research. These funds also enhance elk habitat, which benefits elk and many other wildlife. If selected in the drawing, an elk hunting license costs $49.

1914
James (Jim) Jordan was a 22-year-old hunter from Burnett County, Wisconsin, when he shot the record buck on November 20, 1914. The Jordan Buck scores 206 1/8 net typical points according to the Boone and Crockett Club scoring system.

History

On November 20, 1914, Jim Jordan was hunting with his friend Engus Davis in Danbury, Wisconsin. A recent snowfall helped them track a fresh set of footprints, which led them to the world-record buck. Jim used his .25-20 Wi******er rifle to shoot the buck and later found the deer in the Yellow River. A strange series of events followed after the buck was left with local taxidermist George VanCastle. After waiting several months for the mount, Jim went to George’s home in Hinckley, Minnesota, only to discover that George had moved. However, Jim was unaware that the mount was still in George’s attic. In 1958, the original Jordan Buck mount appeared at a rummage sale in Sandstone, Minnesota, where it was bought by Bob Ludwig. In 1971, the Jordan Buck was sent to Pennsylvania for official scoring by a Boone & Crockett judges’ panel, where it was confirmed as a new world record with a final net typical score of 206 1/8 points. It wasn't until 1978 that James Jordan was recognized as the hunter and Danbury, Wisconsin, as the location of the kill. Sadly, James Jordan passed away two months before the Boone & Crockett Club made their decision.
The Jordan Buck held the world record for typical white-tailed deer for nearly 80 years. It was surpassed in 1993 by a buck taken by Milo Hanson in Saskatchewan. Even after 100 years, the Jordan Buck remains the highest-scoring typical whitetail ever taken in the United States. The Jordan Buck is renowned worldwide for its massive antlers and unusual history. It was part of the original Legendary Whitetails collection owned by Larry Huffman. The original antlers were bought along with Huffman's entire collection.
