FΓͺte des Fleurs is our September flower festival, and it lands the one week a year when everything peaks at the same time. Sunflowers towering overhead, zinnias packed with color, cosmos opening across the field, and plenty of varieties you may not have seen before. πŸ’β˜€οΈ

Pick a bouquet, wander the rows, take photos, or simply find a pretty place to spend a while. Come for sunset yoga, floral arranging, you-pick blooms, and a weekend centered around color, abundance, and the fleeting beauty of the season. 🧘

And because it is still Wilson’s in September, there is plenty happening outside the flower rows too. Apples and raspberries are ready for picking, tractor rides are running, the Farmyard is open, and there will be live music, warm apple cider donuts, pizza, fresh cider, and fall hard ciders waiting when you are done! 🍁

🌸 Sept 10-13 | 9am-9pm

Chef Jake has been building this one for months, and it's finally ready. πŸ™Œ The long-time favorites kept their spots, because taking away The One I Love pizza or the For Crying Out Loud meatloaf sandwich would probably start a small riot. πŸ˜‚

Joining them are a few new seasonal dishes, including the Ciderhouse Mussels appetizer, the Des Moines Dip sandwich, and The Song That Never Ends pizza. 🀀 (Naming them is one of Jake's favorite parts of the job!)

And flip the physical menu over when you sit down. Supporting local farms like ours is the whole ethos at the Ciderhouse, and the back page now carries a list of the local growers and producers we partner with! πŸŒŽπŸ§‘β€πŸŒΎβ€οΈ

A bee looking at this flower sees something we never will. 🐝 Bees pick up ultraviolet light, and a lot of flowers carry markings in that range that are invisible to us, dark landing strips and bullseyes running down the petals toward the middle. Every color in this field is a message, and not one of them was written for us. We are reading somebody else's mail and enjoying it anyway β€οΈπŸ’

Mother Nature is a mathematician. πŸƒπŸ“ The seeds inside a sunflower spiral out from the center at an angle that packs them in as tightly as geometry allows. Count the spirals curving one way, then the other, and you will usually land on 34 and 55, two numbers straight out of the Fibonacci sequence. Not one sunflower has ever had a math class but somehow it just knows! 🌻🧠

Every apple on Earth traces back to the Tian Shan mountains, where a wild apple called Malus sieversii still grows on its own with nobody tending it 🌎

Scientists think birds and bears carried those seeds out of Kazakhstan long before humans ever thought to plant anything, and bears being bears, they went for the biggest and sweetest ones. 🐻 So the apple in your hand this weekend is partly the result of a very long, very slow bear preference. The largest city in the region takes its name from the Kazakh word for apple. We are just continuing the tradition in Iowa 🍎

The heat broke, and you can feel it out in the trees. Mid 80s, a little air moving through the rows, and apples sitting heavy enough on the branch that they hand themselves over with barely a twist. We have three days of apple picking ahead of us, and nothing is stopping you from coming twice. πŸ˜‰πŸŽ

Watch a kid meet a sheep for the first time and you'll see them do something they almost never do, which is stand completely still. They go quiet, they get careful, and they figure out on their own that this animal has its own ideas about how close it wants to get. Right now our sheep are back from their vacation, looking soft and unbothered and spending most of the day outrunning Wilson, who only wants to be friends. One of these days they'll figure out he's on their side. πŸ‘πŸ•β€οΈ
