Nutwood Farm

Nutwood Farm We endeavor to become the first small commercial nut farm in Massachusetts, growing hazelnuts, chestnuts, walnuts, butternuts, and stone pines.

Nutwood Farm is a regenerative agroforestry nut farm in Cummington, MA growing hazelnuts, chestnuts & other tree crops and perennial foods for our local foodshed. Nutwood Farm is an abundant, diverse ecological habitat intentionally stewarded to provide a wide array of edible nuts, fruits, grains, and medicine for our regional foodshed. Our work is to inspire deeper changes in how we relate to foo

d and the socioecological systems we partake in, demonstrating the principles of regenerative agriculture, strengthening community food sovereignty and economic sufficiency, and embodying appropriate human relationship with the earth. As the hedgerow plantings mature atop our contour berms, inter-plantings of edible shrubs, berries, and medicinal understory herbs will blanket our field with habitat and food. Rice paddies, fruit trees, and small vegetable and herb gardens will round out the diversity of our homestead, along with beehives, a small herd of sheep and some amorous ducks. Greenhouses attached to the south face of our passive solar timber frame strawbale home will continue the abundance of production year-round where more exotic herbs, fruits, and spices will thrive. Our vibrant and reciprocal community will complete our vision of a thriving local farm in a place we honor and care for that gives meaning to our lives. We welcome all to join us in this motley adventure and manifest vision- we will happily offer our knowledge, experiences and mistakes along the way as we explore a lifetime of relationship with the human and ecological landscapes we are embedded in.

Our little orchard is still young and unreliable, and so every year we process over a dozen boxes of seconds peaches and nectarines from Apex for our winter fruit canning. We enjoy them literally every single day of the cold season, and it is all thanks to the hands of this crew! We are in your debt! πŸ‘πŸŽπŸ§‘

We have a limited number of beautiful African geese available for your holiday feasting! β„πŸŒ²
Our flock has been been happily tree ranged and raised with love in our orchard and farm pond. They are much richer, fattier, and tastier than chicken or turkey, and make for a memorable meal.
Reserve your bird for on-farm slaughter in December and you will have the option to take your bird home fresh! Full details and pre-order forms are now up on the website! πŸ‘†

Great little summary of everything that's happened in the last 30 or so years of commercial hazelnut production in North America. Amazing how much can happen in a relatively short amount of time. So much really is possible for our future on this planet!

Bullied by blight, the filbert has long failed to find a home on farms in the eastern U.S. After decades of research, its arrival is imminent.

Goodbye dear ! Our magical home for the first eight years of our partnership has gone to a new caretaker for a second life! So many memories of it's hard not to be nostalgic. That time a skunk 🦨 walked in through the screen door in the middle of the night. The hops 🌿 that grew under the flap and into the kitchen every summer. The time our stove pipe popped off with a fire πŸ”₯ burning in the woodstove. The sound of snow ❄ sliding off the roof (be still my heart). The early morning birdsong 🐦. The night owls πŸ¦‰ and coyotes, thunderstorms and wind - those walls are thin! That time we birthed our baby πŸ‘Ά during an icestorm. Many many woodstove 🍲 cooked meals. Baby baths in the canning pot . Chopping wood and carrying waterπŸ’§. So much life lived in those rounded lattice walls. So long yurt! Your next great adventure awaits πŸ’š
