A few people have asked about the new buildings we built, so we thought we would add a few pictures and comments about them. They are 42' wide 128' long 14' tall. They have 16' over head doors on each end for a drive through feed alley. We feed on the inside and also along the south outside wall. There are divided into 4 pens. Three pens that hold 75 ewes, and 1 pen that holds 25 ewes. So far, we really like these buildings and they provide our sheep with exactly what we wanted them to. The biggest down side to this design is having to lock the ewes up each morning to drive the tractor through to feed them. It does not take long, but it adds a few minutes to chores for each of the buildings. The air quality in these buildings has been great with the 8' side curtains. We do have fans in the buildings to help move some hot air in the summer.

We filled our bin with corn this week. We use the bins in the picture to store multiple different ingredients we use to feed our lambs out and to add to our corn silage and haylage based diets for the ewes. We use corn, oats, soyhull pellets, soybean meal, and a protein supplement pellet. Each stage of production uses different ingredients, depending on what the nutritional needs of the sheep are in that stage.
Harvest is in full swing here like it may be for many of you. We finished up combining beans and have around ten days left on corn.
Our next lambing group will start November 10th, which will be here before we know it! We'll be weaning our oldest groups of September born lambs in the next couple of weeks (pictured below). We'll have a group of mature ewes lambing in January/February and the rams were put in last week with our ewe lambs for a March 1st start date (pictured in the video below).

Spring for us has been busy. We got our crops in, building pads built, construction started on 2 curtain barns, kids out of school for the summer, a quick trip to visit some friends and mentors, and ewes just keep on lambing. Our January ewe lambs are off to their new homes and the later groups are coming along nicely. We have three groups left to wean and will have a group start lambing July 15. We've got our January lambing ewes bred back to lamb in September and will be putting CIDRs in this week for a November lambing group.
Many people have asked for pictures and videos of our bunk lids and want information on how they work. Here is a short video of us feeding ewes in our lambing barn. The ewes get fed on the inside of the building first. Then, we open the lids and feed them along the outside of the building. The lids can also be opened with the hydraulics of our skid loader if the electricity is out.

It’s hard to believe with all this nice weather we’ve been having, but cold weather is sure to be here before we know it. With that in mind, we want to remind everyone to prepare buildings, waters, and feed equipment for colder weather. It is important to keep in mind that ewes will have higher energy requirements in extreme cold situations. It is also time to be calling your shearer, if you haven’t done so already, to schedule your shearing to be done at least a month prior to lambing. Getting ewes sheared in preparation for lambing season has many benefits. It can help make it easier for lambs to nurse, it allows you to see what type of body condition the ewes are in so you can adjust their ration if necessary, and it can help keep your lambing barn drier and warmer.
Here is a look at our November born lambs. We have just a handful of ewes left in this group and will then have a break until we start lambing again January 10th.
We started lambing our November ewes on the 10th and, after a bit of a rough start, things are going much better! Most of these ewes had their first lambs back in April 2021 and are lambing again now.
Our fall lambs are growing nicely and we will wean our oldest groups next week. We weaned some of our milk replacer lambs last week and they are really taking off! We wean lambs off the milk machines around 35 days of age. All of our twin/triplet born ewe lambs out of this group are going to Pennsylvania, but we will have some nice September born twin/triplet ram lambs available. Our next group of ewes will start lambing November 10th!
Fall lambing always seems to come and go in a hurry, and this year was no exception. We are very happy with the lambs we have on the ground so far! We are about 3/4 of the way through our September group and have another group of 165 due November 10th. Silage chopping was a little ahead of schedule this year due to the dry weather. We chopped August 18th this year. As always, we have lots of good helpers around the barn :) They may not always be quite as helpful as they intend, but we're so glad they get to work side by side with us! (More pictures and videos in the comments)
Just a few pictures we passed over during winter lambing. Soon we will begin our fall lambing group. This summer we added number 4 to our crew. She is 2 months old now.
Come see us! This week the National Sheep Improvement Program is putting on a FREE workshop for producers. It can be beneficial to all types of producers, new comers or life long producers. Part of the workshop includes farm tours. One of the farms they are going to is our farm. We have utilized NSIP enrolled rams since we started and believe it has the potential to help everyone out. It is helpful with not only tracking genetics and finding breeding stock, but also with helping producers connect and help each other improve their farm and the sheep on it. We encourage anyone that is willing to make the trip to come to our farm this Thursday night, July 29th. If possible make a weekend out of it and go to Kevin Goeken's Friday morning and the NSIP sale on Saturday. Even if you do not need a ram this year, please come to meet producers to get and share ideas. We can not count the number of people who have asked to come to our farm for a tour, NOW is the time to come. This is a chance not only to visit with us, but to visit with multiple other producers. We all need each other's help to strengthen the American Sheep Industry. Please register at nsip.org/events
Mark your calendar now and join us for some great farm tours and educational sessions on July 29 and 30 followed by the Center of the Nation Sale on July 31.

Here is a short video of our September 2020 lambs. We have been extremely happy with this group. The twin and triplet, fall born ewe lambs out of this group are for sale and we are taking deposits on them now. Send us a message if you are interested and want more information.
We have been super busy lambing. These ewes lambed in January and were exposed back and are lambing for us again now. They as a group will average 3.75 lambs/ewe produced in 2020!
It's been a while since we have posted, so we thought we should give everyone an update! Our fall lambing ewes will begin lambing September first. There are 176 ewes that will lamb in a 25 day time frame. Late gestation is a critical time for the lamb's development. Nutrition, vaccinations, and overall daily care are vital to lamb survival at birth. Weak lambs are more susceptible to diseases and death. Raising profitable lambs starts with the ewe, so do not slack when it comes to the ewe's well being.
We took a quick video of the May lambing ewes with thier lambs today. We had a few challenges during lambing with this group of ewes due to hot weather, but things are back on track and going well.
Here is a perfect example of a highly productive ewe. Although we dont expect her to feed all 4 lambs, she sure puts a lot of effort into taking care of each one of them, keeping them close to each other when they are first born.
On Saturday, we had the February lambs sheared. We are happy with how the replacment ewe lambs look after shearing. There are still about 65 of these ewe lambs available for sale. They will be ready to be picked up the first part of June. Please send us a message if you're interested and want more information on them.
These are some of the replacement ewe lambs we have this year. These are all born as twins, triplets, or quads. They are sired by polypay rams that are in the top 20% of the breed enrolled in the NSIP data base. We still have 80 February born ewe lambs available. If you are interested in our genetics now is the time to reserve your 2020 ewe lambs. These will go quick. All of our ewe lambs are sold gate cut.
This past week was a busy week here. We pulled CIDRs out of ewes and put rams in for fall lambing, We weaned another set of lambs, we got the May lambing group sheared and we began spring field work. Here is a video of our May lambing group being sheared. These ewes would be the ewes that lambed last September. We were hoping to shear the January lambs the same day but will the weather coming we decided it would be best to wait a week to do them. Also, thank you to everyone who has sent deposits on ewe lambs. They are growing and changing quickly!
Yesterday we took the time to sort off the January twin and triplet born ewe lambs. We will let them grow and develop for about another 30 days, then we will go through and sort the top end of them out to go to our replacement ewe lamb buyers.
Our January lambs are starting to look good! A few are missing from this video since they are not weaned yet. The ewe lambs in this group are all sold, however, there are still ewe lambs available from the February born lambs. Please let us know if you have any interest in ewe lambs. We take a $25 per head deposit to reserve them for you. There are also some of Pro Ewe Genetics ram lambs in this group. If your interested in any rams get ahold of us!
Braxton is starting to help out more and more. I think the nerf gun was kept close incase a ewe got past him.
We sorted and sold the first cut of our fall born lambs the other day. These lambs weighed 142 pounds at 5 1/2 months old! We were extremely happy with this set of lambs from the start. We want to thank the people who bought the replacement ewe lambs from this group. We enjoyed meeting and visiting with everyone!
January was a busy month for us. This is a video of most of our January born lambs. We are extremely happy with how they are developing. There will be a great set of ewe lambs for sale in May from these January lambs. Our Febuary lambing ewes start tommorow.
This group of ewes starts lambing January 10th 2020. We are excited and looking forward to this year's lambing. We will have ewes lambing January, Febuary, March, May, and September.
We have 26 fall born ewe lambs left for sale. These ewe lambs will make excellent ewes. The best part about buying ewe lambs is that you can grow and develope them YOUR way. You can breed them to the rams of your choice and have them in the correct condition. These commercial polypay ewe lambs were born in September of 2019 and weigh around 80 pounds. All of the ewe lambs were born as either twins or triplets. The longer I keep these ewe lambs the harder it is to let them go. They look better every day! Let us know if you're interested. * Sold Pending pick up- Thank you for everyone's interest. We will have more ewe lambs available in the spring. We start lambing again Jan. 10th 2020
-WE HAVE 28 LEFT! * 2019 Fall born polypay ewe lambs. All of these ewe lambs were born and raised as either twins or triplets.Their birth dates are between Sept. 5th through Oct. 1 2019 right now they are between 70 and 80 pounds. most of them closer to 70. I have them priced at $210 per head if picked up sometime soon and as they grow the price will increase with their age. These are all replacement quality, multiple birth born ewe lambs and are sired from NSIP backed Polypay rams. If there is something the buyer does not like it will be sorted off. They are located near Curlew, Iowa 50527
We are Kyle and Carrie Hurley and we own and operate Hurley Polypay Sheep Farm. Kyle grew up on a farm raising grain, cattle, and a few sheep. Carrie grew up on a farm raising grain and cattle. In 2013, we got married, and, later that year, decided to invest into raising sheep. Since then, we have focused on improving the sheep we raise and investing into facilities to make raising sheep less labor intensive and profitable. We find the Polypay breed to stand out among the rest with their diversity for prolificacy and meat production. We hope to improve the knowledge and production of the sheep industry by supplying top breeding stock to other commercial sheep producers.
