If you’ve ever come back from a day of hunting Yooperlites, agates, or Lake Superior treasures with buckets full of sandy, muddy rocks, you’ll appreciate our newest addition!

We built a dedicated rock cleaning station right beside the Tiny Cabin so you can rinse off your finds before packing them up to take home. No more trying to wash rocks in the cabin sink!

🎣 Bonus: If fishing is more your style, it also works great for cleaning your catch before dinner.

There’s something special about walking through the gardens on a quiet summer morning. Every day brings something new, and today it’s time to harvest one of our favorite seasonal treats—garlic scapes!

If you’ve never heard of garlic scapes, they’re the curly green flower stalks that grow from hardneck garlic. We harvest them before they bloom so the garlic plant can put all of its energy into growing large, flavorful bulbs underground. The scapes themselves are delicious too! They have a mild garlic flavor and are wonderful in pesto, stir-fries, roasted vegetables, soups, or simply sautéed in butter.
After the scapes are harvested, the garlic will continue growing for another few weeks. We’ll know it’s ready to dig when the lower leaves begin to turn brown while several upper leaves are still green—usually in late July or early August here in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

As I made my way through the garden this morning, I also spotted the first raspberries beginning to ripen. Those tiny red berries are always a welcome sign that summer is in full swing!

The homestead is bursting with life right now. Some crops are ready to harvest, others are just beginning, and we’re already planning our second plantings to keep the garden producing well into the season. Everywhere you look, the flowers are putting on a show, adding so much color and attracting bees and butterflies that help keep everything growing.

This truly is one of the most beautiful times of the year to visit the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The gardens are thriving, the forests are lush, the days are long, and there’s always something new to discover around the homestead.

🌿 Nature’s Medicine Cabinet is Almost in Bloom! 🌿

One of our favorite things about life at Hideaway Tiny Acres is surrounding ourselves with beautiful perennials that not only brighten the landscape but have been treasured for generations for their natural healing properties.

These lush plants are Yarrow, and they’re just days away from putting on a spectacular display of creamy white blooms!

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) has a long history in herbal medicine. Traditionally, it has been used to:

🌱 Support wound healing and help stop minor bleeding
🌱 Soothe irritated skin
🌱 Calm inflammation
🌱 Brew into herbal teas to support digestion and seasonal wellness
🌱 Infuse into oils for homemade salves, balms, and skin care products

The flowers, leaves, and upper stems can all be harvested once the plant is in full bloom. They can be dried for teas, infused into oils, made into tinctures, or incorporated into healing salves. (As with any medicinal herb, it’s important to learn proper identification, preparation, and safety before using it.)

This is just the beginning of a dream we’ve been growing at Hideaway Tiny Acres. 🌿

Our hope is that by next year, we’ll be able to offer our own line of handcrafted herbal products including balms, salves, tinctures, and other botanical creations made from plants sustainably harvested right here on our property and throughout Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula.

The promise of August is already blooming at Hideaway Tiny Acres!

These delicate white blossoms are the first sign that our wild blackberries are on their way. By August, these trails will be filled with ripe, sweet berries just waiting to be picked—a favorite treat for both our guests and the local wildlife.

If you’ve never experienced August in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, it’s truly one of the best times to visit. The weather is comfortably warm, the mosquitoes and black flies have mostly disappeared, and the forests are alive with the sights, sounds, and flavors of late summer. It’s the perfect season to slow down, enjoy a peaceful walk, relax around the campfire, and soak in the beauty of nature.

Watch closely….

We’re putting the finishing touches on the new pavilion at Stargazer Retreat, we discovered we weren’t the only ones excited about the new space.

Tucked high up in the rafters is a tiny baby bird, patiently waiting for mom and dad to return with breakfast. 🐦

If you watch closely, you’ll spot a little beak peeking up from the nest. It’s a gentle reminder that life moves at a different pace here at Hideaway Tiny Acres. While we’re busy building places for people to relax and reconnect, nature is building homes of its own.

We think this little one has already claimed the best seat in the house. ❤️
