Louise wants everyone to know that it’s finally,
PORKtober 🤎
The whole month of October is Pork Month! Where producers, consumers, swine professionals & every day people come together and focus on the value of a pig - not just for their meat. The swine industry provides a way of life for farmers, whether it’s one pig or one hundred.
One way I like to look at it is - imagine you have a younger child/teen in your life; whether it’s your own, a niece/nephew, grandchild, etc. That child comes up to you and talks about ways they can get out into the community, ways they can learn responsibility, ways they can navigate a path to a future career (I’m speaking from experience of course) - the list goes on. Some will say the easiest way to do so is going to local events, being given a list of chores to do around the house, etc. BUT one of the best ways for a younger child to learn more about all aspects above is to be handed an animal to care for, and I couldn’t agree more!
What I’m getting at is - that I was given an opportunity at a young age to be around farm animals, be in 4H, show cattle - the list goes on. But I can see exactly the way those earlier teachings brought me to where I am today. At a young age I learned what it was like to take care of a living creature, big or small - to learn responsibility. To carve a path to my career. To be involved in the community in ways I would never imagine. This is what pork month is all about - a pigs legacy.
A teaching moment for all around. A friend, one can talk to (that doesn’t talk back 🤭), a 4H show partner, a mama to many piglets, a meal for a family in need, and so much more.
A pig is more, than just a pig.
Happy Pork Month!
