Attended an awesome demo today at Harvey's Homestead Supply on Lacto-fermentation. Their daughter is extremely knowledgeable and well spoken. She is a true educator. Highly recommend attending their demos if you’re local.

We have done sauerkraut before successfully but one time we followed a carrot recipe and ended up with some of the bad mold.

As the harvests wind down, we managed to get some broccoli and cauliflower yesterday. That’s a small head but it’s because it was in the weeds and not under shade cloth.

The zucchini and yellow squash were hit by frost Labor Day weekend, but the plants are still alive…so hoping for one last harvest there.

I haven’t grown cilantro in 2 years yet we had a volunteer pop up. I let it go to seed and harvested the coriander. Probably a bit early for it but gonna dry it and see how it goes.

Brussel sprouts had their lower leaves trimmed. Mainly because I cram plants in the gardens. So this time of year it’s asking for disease and fungus with no air flow.

A little levity for those who need it today…

The door sometimes doesn’t latch right. We heard Diesel get up while we were canning today. Like a toddler, it got quiet. Mr YHF found him face deep enjoying the soaked pig feed.

Although most of the evidence came off, he is still sporting grain on his snout! BUSTED

Greenhouse experiment going well. Bok choy, spinach, cabbage sprouting and growing fast!

BUT will we harvest any?

Weather has been warm. Understandable. When the weather turns soon and drops and flip flops will the plants do well? Time will tell

Acorn and Butterbush squash slowly coming along. Hello? I started both indoors on 4/1. They’re a bush/shorter vining variety with a shorter maturity date.

Now they arrive. Hoping no more frost for a while. I managed to keep them covered during the last 3 frosty nights.

The cayenne pepper plant transplanted so well. Lots of blossoms and some peppers forming under the grow light.

Weekend harvest and putting up veggies for us to enjoy all year long. Thankful the brassicas are still going after that cold spell! That’s definitely a reason why we go heavy on those types of plants.

9/6/25 - 28F at 6 AM. Cucumbers and plants in the house garden are done.

Brassicas in the overflow garden are still going.

Been covering the raised bed gardens to eek out some squash until it matures. Even covered the plants look rough.

9/5/25

34F at 5:30am and 32F a bit after that. It was breezy so we did not observe a frost per se. But thankful I covered the acorn, buttercup and butternut squash!

Friends said they had frost and 28f! Crazy how much variation there is here due to topography.

On 9/1, impulsivity won again! I planted some cold hardy seeds in our main greenhouse. Gonna play mad scientist and see what happens! Tried to get some chard seeds because I didn’t have any but of course, seeds are all put away in the stores now.

Bacon hits different when you raise, butcher, cure and smoke it yourself.

KuneKune pigs are a heritage breed, known for their marbled meat full of flavor. Due to them being lard pigs, their fat creates a juicier, flavorful end product.

The meat cuts are smaller than what most are used to from commercial hogs. However, we are thankful for the smaller size. As such, we are able to handle the smaller size by processing right here at home.

What are you proud of raising on your farm?

Happy Wednesday friends!
