What exactly is success?

Oxford Dictionary defines it as “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose”, while Wikipedia’s version states “Success is the state or condition of meeting a defined range of expectations. It may be viewed as the opposite of failure. The criteria for success depend on context, and may be relative to a particular observer or belief system.”

My quandary remains in the measurable metrics of the “range of expectations.”

Are the expectations personal? Are they universal, dependent on the industry or genre, or are they of a more economic based nature? Do we measure one’s success by the wealth that they amass…or their personal growth…or perhaps one’s satisfaction of the quality of the products produced? Or is it as elementary as cultivating meaningful relationships?

I define myself as a winner…though, again, one can be observed as something different when measured by others.

The unfortunate universal fact is…one can’t win every time.

The granular level of detail, strategic thinking and obsession required to provide a delightful, memorable experience in a high-volume business is difficult…which leads me to the purpose of this writing.

As of December 30, Puff Belly's will close the brewpub. It is a painful, heartbreaking decision, but one made purely of logic and experience.

Unforeseen circumstances have hastened my decision, but please understand that we have been extremely humbled serving you for the past 3+ years…I have personally met and worked with wonderful souls…with some becoming very close friends.

That is what I consider success.

Born in Bavaria, Kosmos Spoetzl’s passion for beer carried him as far as Egypt before arriving in tiny Shiner, Texas. There, in 1915, he purchased the town’s brewery and became Shiner’s first official brewmaster, a post that he held until he passed away in 1950. So any time you pick up a cold Shiner beer, take a moment to give thanks to this man, because without him that beer wouldn't exist!
