It has been quite a summer for The Yon Farm and fall is just around the corner. With the late, cold, wet spring making for poor seed germination and the crows taking most of the pumpkin seed, we had to plant most of our garden 2 times. The summer nights dipping into the 40's were perfect for sleeping but did not do much for the garden. We had lots of rain this year and the green beans didn't seem to mind (except for the cold days and nights that made them stop growing) they produced about 1-1/2 bushels every 3 days. The beans and pickling cucumbers were all that kept us going at first, then the summer squash came and we had beautiful patty pan and zephyer, the plants were small and as a result not many squash. Our cantaloupe are far and few between, they thrive on hot summer days and warm summer nights of which we had few. Our raspberries are doing very well for the first time, all of the rain we have had lately is just right for making ripe berries. This is going to be our 3rd annual pumpkin patch and when I look in the field I see that the patch is mostly small plants with under size fruit and not the numbers we hoped for. We are fortunate to find a farm down state that is willing to sell us pumpkins at a reasonable rate, we will use the money that we made over the summer on the beans, cucumbers and squash to purchase the pumpkins that we will need for this year. We were able to purchase another hay wagon this year from the Shepard farm and we will be able to pull both wagons at the same time when we need to. The schools are contacted and they are scheduling classes during the week days for hay rides, corn maze, pumpkins and hot chocolate. We are proud to say The Yon Farm 3rd annual pumpkin patch will be Sept. 27 through Oct. 6 so come on out and have a good time.
