Transplants from Chicago who have enjoyed creating a hobby farm on our beautiful 22 acres in Knox Co Now we produce for ourselves and our friends only.

Robert and Julie Haugland are the heart & soul of this little farm. Started by Robert in 1975 as an urban farm (way before the term existed) on Scott Street in Franklin Park, Illinois, Julie & Robert moved to Knox County in 2006, gutted the house, got married in 2007 and established Smiling Frog Farm on 22 acres on a ridge in Dahinda, Illinois. We raise a wide variety of veggies, fruit, herbs & an
d eggs with the occasional pig. Our family consists of 20 chickens, 4 ducks, 2 geese, a guinea hen, 1 turkey named Petunia, 6 goats, 2 alpacas, about a dozen barn cats, 3 porch cats, 1 house cat, and 1 black lab named Raven! From 2008 to 2011, we managed and grew produce for the Local Growers' Network, an award-winning project that offered local produce to area customers at the beginning of the local food trend. Julie created, owned & operated Vintages Tasting Room, a boutique wine bar & shop in Galesburg from 2006 to 2017. During those years, she discovered meditation and took many classes on spiritual development and "awakening." She finds solace & sanctuary in Smiling Frog Farm and has dreamt for a long time of sharing this magical land with others. To that end, we have been working on the Retreat & Meditation Center at Smiling Frog Farm for a few years. The vision is one that includes walkable trails & paths where visitors can discover numerous meditation stations. Gardens, a small orchard, secluded campground with a 16 foot Bell tent, a she-shed classroom offering a wide variety of classes, events, retreats, an outdoor chapel, outdoor space for yoga, Qigong, drum circles, an outdoor bar area (Robert's domain) and more are in the making. For more information on current events or reserving space for a private event, please contact us or visit the Retreat & Meditation Center at Smiling Frog Farm on FB .

Sacred Medicine Wheel garden is coming along nicely for beginning of May.
Started some Hyacinth Bean seeds on April 5. I used an egg carton, cut the lid off and layered the bottom egg cells into the top. Seeded each cell, then watered and covered in plastic. Every single seed sprouted and 98% grew rapidly. Turns out, with that damp, dark layer the lid made, the roots had a place to easily grow, giving me very strong seedlings. Today I easily broke apart the egg cells to transplant into biodegradable bags, added lots more soil and all are now in an old busboy tub at 10 days old.
Spring has arrived!

Because we, as growers/producers, need to plan out how much we are growing based on the number of shares purchased, we need to know ASAP so we can get appropriate number of plants started, plan out our gardens and know how much volume to plan for. As the growing season gets underway, your boxes will be smaller...as the harvests become abundant, the boxes will contain a larger quantity. While our goal is to fill your box with produce at or above the weekly value of your basket, the volume of the box will vary--at the peak of the season, you will receive more produce than you likely will right at the beginning. One of the benefits of participating in a CSA is learning the old time practice of eating with the seasons.
Weekly shares may be picked up on our farms in Dahinda or Oneida or Galesburg. Arrangements will be made that suit your needs, within reason. If convenient to all, we may be able to work out other pick-up or delivery locations. Reusable boxes will be provided, but must be returned each week.
There are a limited number of CSA shares for purchase, only 6 slots are left for the 2012 season. So, reserve yours today!

Frog Pond Farm has changed its name! Due to the fact that there are many Frog Pond Farms in our area, and to avoid confusion, we are now Smiling Frog Farm! The meaning of the name of the town we are located in, Dahinda, means "Smiling Frog" in a Native American language.
