I had one of my hives swarm yesterday. It was from a recovered swarm back in the spring and never did much. It was 65 feet up an oak tree so I will not try to recover it. Being that not much is blooming right now it will most likely not survive. It took the remainder of the colony and removed all the queen cells and cups and placed a strong nuc over it. That way they will have a new queen and be strong enough to make it though the winter.

Not the way to smoke your bees.
We had a fire up on the mountain today. Around 100 acers burned. I lost one of my bee yards and my storage building along with most of my beekeeping equipment. No one was hurt and no houses burned.

I opened up the hive that swarmed. I found queen cells, lots of bees but could not find the queen. I split the hive in two and also made a nuc. I left two queen cells in each side of the split plus the nuc. I will check them in a few days. A nuc is a nucleus hive with 5 frames in it. It has everything to make a colony.

The spring honey flow is in full swing. I have had to add honey supers to most of the hives. We had one of the hives swarm today and they went up into the air then all come back. I guess the queen did not leave the hive. I will investigate.
