Ever wonder what it actually costs to raise and process five pigs?

We recently picked up five pigs from the processor. Together, they weighed approximately 1,000 pounds hanging weight.

Here’s the breakdown:

🐖 Purchase price for five pigs: $375 that’s a deal!
🌽 Feed cost: +-$1,156.40
🥩 Processing bill: $2,578.28

Total invested: $4,109.68

That works out to about $821.94 per pig, or $4.11 per pound based on hanging weight.

And that is before counting our labor, fuel, fencing, water, equipment, freezer space, electricity, market fees, card fees from customer sales, or any unexpected expenses along the way.

This is why locally raised pork cannot be priced like grocery-store pork. When you purchase from a small farm, you are helping cover the real cost of raising animals responsibly, processing them at a USDA-inspected facility, keeping the meat properly frozen, and making it available directly to local families.

We’re not sharing this to complain. We just want people to understand what goes into getting that package of pork from our farm to your table.

I’m so tired of everyone fighting and arguing and trying to convince us what’s good and what’s bad to only favor themselves. Listen, I don’t care what you do with your life and things, but convincing other people to think in a way that only benefits you in the long run, isn’t right.

Have some integrity.

I wish we could go back to the days before social media. People seemed happier. More people liked each other and didn’t argue about every little thing. We all seemed to help each other more and be good neighbors.

People just seemed to stay in their lane.

Every time I log into any social media, it’s data center this, solar panels that, city this, county that, state this, politics that, wind turbines this, and just so on.
I have never wanted to log into Facebook and see what people are eating more than I do now. I just thought that was annoying.

Turns out, it wasn’t so bad!

I just wanna live my little life with my family, and I wanna farm and everyone leave us alone. I don’t need more, but I don’t need less either. I’m happy with what we have.

But we have to have something left to pass to our children.

I don’t need more places to eat or shop. It seems like every city is trying to grow grow grow. Why? More money, obviously. But when do you quit? When does a city say, ok I think we’re big enough? It appears never.

I’m also tired of the insane increase of traffic around here. It is horrible moving equipment now. I’ve lived here 30 years now, and I liked it how it was. Boring.

But hey, at least everyone quit complaining about farmers now and have moved on to “saving the farmers”. Well, good luck to y’all. I truly hope you do. But remember, if you save us, no more complaining about what we do. I hope our family can continue farming ground here for future generations. If we can fight off urban sprawl, green energy, and greed, I’ll be the happiest person here.

I guess the outcome is to be determined.
