The NatGeo photoshoot of Angelina Jolie’s beesperience keeps making the rounds - and every time I see it, I flash back to THIS lovely spring day with my girls at the Rogue Valley Growers Market ✨

This was about halfway through myself & OSU Emeritus Professor Burgess’s hour-plus bee beardstravaganza on “Kid’s Day” at the market.

Dr. Burgess coached students and celebrities through over 200 bee beards at this point, and said this was the most amazing experience he’d had. After an hour, I ended up with a perfect three-pound beard of bees hanging from my face in perfect symmetry - and not one sting!!

We wanted to show kids, and their parents, that honey bees are gentle friends to keep - reducing fear, sparking fascination, and hopefully inspiring action in bee conservation.

BGO partnered with the market to provide a fun bee-themed day and to give away flower seeds and provide information on growing food without harsh pesticides.

This was also in the midst of our EE (Environmental Education) masters student intern, Ryan King’s, campaign to legalize beekeeping in all of our towns in Southern Oregon.

We spent over a year working with municipal staff: making presentations, gathering signatures, and organizing beekeepers to testify at city council meetings in Medford, Ashland, Phoenix, and Jacksonville. And we won! All the towns!!

My eyes are now turned towards the outskirts of town, and getting flowers into our agricultural lands, but I look back at this time fondly, and appreciate the fact that people will never stop loving watching honey bees crawl on people.

Originally a marketing ploy at farmers markets in Medieval Europe, it still never ceases to amaze a crowd (or the whole Internet) - and I love that.

🥚Did you know that commercial poultry feed companies and egg factory farms add marigold and other ingredients to make the egg yolks their chickens lay more orange in color? So yolk color isn't always a great gauge of how nutritious that egg is or how good quality. And it definitely doesn't signify that the egg is fresh or that it was laid by a happy chicken. My hens haven't seen grass or much fresh produce in months, so their egg yolks aren't quite as dark as they are in the summer months, but these are still THE best eggs around because they're super fresh and my girls ARE happy. They're treated well, they're all safe and happy. I spend quality time with them, and they have swings and benches, outdoor perches, and a dust bath. They have herbs and flowers in their nesting boxes. I make them suet cakes and seed blocks to keep them from getting bored, and they even have a mirror to preen in front of and a xylophone to peck at (although none have shown the least bit of musical ability!). If you don't have chickens of your own ...WHY NOT?!?!? But seriously, please go find a local farmers market or farm. Find a neighbor or co-worker who sells eggs. You won't be sorry. And you will notice a difference. You just can't beat fresh. And happy. And if you are thinking about adding some chickens to your backyard, check out the beginners tab on my blog --> 🥚

Don’t get me wrong, I like supporting Jeff Bezos just as much as the next gal, but this year we’re trying to spend our hard earned money a bit more intentionally.

If you have something to sell, please tell the people how to support you in the comments!

RAW MILK AND RAW CHEESE LIKELY CONTRIBUTE TO THE FRENCH'S LOW RATES OF HEART DISEASE AND MORTALITY - "high consumption of dairy products, and especially cheese by the French population might contribute to the explanation of the French paradox... intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP), a potent endogenous anti-inflammatory enzyme... is present in raw milk and dairy products increasingly consumed in France. It is deactivated by pasteurization..."!

Happy World Honey Bee Day ✨

I owe a debt of gratitude to the moon and back for the life these bees have given me.

I wish they could know the fierceness of my love for them, but maybe they do.

Please join me in generating some deep, genuine appreciation for our honey bees today 🍯

From "Goat milk is the most commonly consumed type of dairy in the world. In fact, 65% to 72% of all dairy consumed globally is goat milk. This is partially due to the ease of keeping goats as opposed to cows in developing countries, where goat milk is an important source of calories, protein, and fats. In many countries, people express a preference for goat milk over cow milk.

Goat milk is thicker and creamier than cow milk or plant milks, and goat milk has more nutrients that may offer health benefits. For example:

Easier to digest
Less risk of milk allergies
Better heart health
If you’re considering drinking goat milk, it’s important to understand the benefits it can provide."

Our dogs, pigs and chickens get a lot of goat milk. It shows in their healthy coat/feathers and strong muscles.

Please shop and spread the word

Paso Robles getting ahead of fire season with the help of goats

Goats will be a familiar sight in the month of May down by the river in Paso Robles. FOX26 reporter Rich Rodriguez visited the Central Coast to see what hundreds of goats will be up to over the next month. The goats have a big job ahead of them in the next month. All they eat in the next month will....

Know the difference! Most of the honey consumed today is processed honey that’s been heated & filtered. Raw honey, on the other hand, does not get robbed of its incredible nutritional value & health powers.

Have you seen these plants? They are called Broadleaf or Broadleaf Plantain
It grows especially well in poor, rocky soil (such as driveways) and is often seen alongside dandelion. More often than not, you will see plantain growing in gravel pits and construction sites as nature seeks to regenerate the soil. Introduced to North America in the 1600s, it was once called “White Man’s Foot” by the Native Americans who witnessed that where the Europeans tread and disrupted the soil, plantain sprung up.
Plantain has often been the go-to remedy for hikers plagued by mosquitos. Because it draws toxins from the body with its astringent nature, plantain may be crushed (or chewed) and placed as a poultice directly over the site of bee stings, bug bites, acne, slivers, glass splinters, or rashes. Bandage the area and allow the plantain to work its magic for 4-12 hours. Plantain may also be used to create a balm for emergency kits, or an infusion used as a skin or general wash. It is also a notable, soothing remedy for hemorrhoids.Plantain is renowned for its healing effect on the digestive system. This is especially useful for anyone who has been damaged by antibiotics, anti-inflammatory or pain medications, food allergies, or Celiac disease. Both leaves and seeds specifically target the digestive system for healing. The leaves may be steeped as tea, added to soups, or dried with a sauce similar to kale chips. The seeds – a type of psyllium – can be ground or soaked for bulk mucilage or absorbable fibre, which, consumed before meals, may help with weight loss.
Because plantain is a gentle expectorant and high in silica, an infusion can be helpful for lung problems, coughs, and colds.
Plantain is almost a panacea for the human body, treating everything from all menstrual difficulties, all digestive issues, to nearly all skin complaints, and even arthritis. Add to salads, chew to ease thirst, or enjoy in stir fries. This versatile wild vegetable will keep you in good health for years to come!

Time to buy hay for winter!
How much hay does a goat need?
In our herd, we generally estimate 6 pounds of hay per goat per day, feeding hay exclusively. We do not grain.
We have 90 tons under math has to work in reverse to have adequate hay for the winter. Why so much?
Long winters - lots of goats... Hoping over time, they will be able to forage longer on the canyon as we increase available pasture, but since everything is under construction, including our hay storage area, there is no time for more fencing this year.
