Virginia Cattlemen’s Association (VCA) is disappointed in the recently announced closure of JBS’s Souderton plant. The loss of significant East Coast harvest capacity is a blow to cattle producers in a region of the country that already has limited processing options.

VCA President Bill McDonald said, “While we are disappointed in JBS’s decision to close Souderton, we remain committed to growing the demand for Virginia cattle and increasing the Commonwealth’s processing capacity. Developments like this underscore the need for more independent processing that supports local producers and communities.”

Virginia Cattlemen’s Association was founded as a cattle marketing association to promote Virginia cattle. In addition to marketing efforts, the association has recently prioritized creating a more resilient supply chain for producers and consumers through the Virginia Verified Beef program. VCA will continue to monitor developments and work to fill the void caused by the Souderton closure.
