I learn by taking notes …

Dan can read a book & immediately process and comprehend it.

I have to jot down notes to learn as I’m writing & then re-read key points for them to sink in.

I have countless notebooks of medical cliff-notes from so many of my favorite books - and this one has become a top contender.

➡️ “Chronic disease is a slow-motion plague that is sabotaging our health, destroying our quality of life, shortening our lifespan, bankrupting our governments, and threatening the health of future generations”.

➡️ 6 in 10 US adults have at least one chronic disease. A 2023 CDC Study indicated that 76.4% of Americans have at least one chronic disease.

➡️ 51% of American adults have multiple chronic diseases

➡️ 90% of all healthcare spending in the US goes toward chronic disease (an estimated $4-5 trillion)

➡️ Chronic disease accounts for 81% of hospital admissions

➡️ Accounts for 91% of prescriptions written in America

➡️ 76% of doctors visit visits are attributed to chronic disease

➡️ Of adults ages 18 through 34, an estimated 60% have at least one chronic condition

➡️ 27% of children in America have a chronic disease

➡️ S***m counts in America gone down by 60% in 40 years due to endocrine disruptors

➡️ In the US, we rely on insurance to pay for care. Their goal is not always aligned with patient or doctor needs. Insurance companies profit when healthcare expenditures grow. Because of this, there’s a little motivation for insurance companies to embrace treatment that would during healthcare expenditures.

👆is why we don’t take insurance at the office.

➡️The same is true for Big Pharma, that relies on making money versus optimizing care

➡️67% of medical research is sponsored by pharmaceutical companies in America

➡️ Insurance companies dictate which treatments can be reimbursed. That is not evidence based medicine. It is reimbursement based medicine.

➡️The rate of type two diabetes in children increases by 5% every year in America

➡️Every 60 seconds, someone in America developed Alzheimer’s. It is now the sixth leading cause of death in America

I don’t go to Sam’s Club very often - but was pleasantly surprised yesterday when I did.

They had a bunch of nice clothes normally marked like $45-60 MSRP for $8-15 each.

Our membership was supposed to cancel a couple of months ago, but apparently I had it on auto renewal, so I decided to go check it out.

I was pleasantly surprised!

Today’s battle … Health Insurance 🤮

Dan and I have always carried minimum health insurance coverage because we’ve been self-employed for so much of our adult life - and it’s just not affordable.

And we’ve been pretty healthy - and he is a physician who can treat things that arise without charging the kids & I.

(Although if I’m honest, I’m sure he sometimes considers sending me a hefty bill - to be our house doc).

At one point, we had Medishare - but it took almost 10 months to even begin the process to cover our son’s $74,000 hospital stay and we grew frustrated and switched over to another company.

One of the worst ideas we have ever made.

If anyone ever offers you Philadelphia Life Health Insurance in the First Health Network…. RUN! It absolutely does not work at any major Medical Center and any promises that they make you will return 100% null and void. 0/10 do not recommend.

It has absolutely not worked at all for our daughter’s ankle injury/surgery and has not worked at all toward my brain tumor diagnosis.

To make matters worse, my brain tumor is now considered a pre-existing condition, which makes it almost impossible for me to find affordable health insurance.

I chatted with a really great local lady today who was able to come up with an $1100 plan for Dan and the kids. It’s through United Health PPO and it sounds like it would be a great plan for our family.

She informed me that she won’t be able to insure me through a standard plan because of my pre-existing condition and handed me off to one of her colleagues.

I asked him how much it would cost to insure me and he said $1100 just for me.

I told him that other than a small benign brain tumor (*hopefully, prayerfully*), I am pretty healthy. I don’t take any prescriptions. I take lots of healthy supplements. My BMI is 20. No long-term health concerns….

Regardless, our monthly out-of-pocket cost just for health insurance just for me is going to be $1100.

I asked what it would take for this to no longer be a pre-existing condition and I was told that I would have to have it removed. I will likely have to have it removed anyway, but there’s also a chance that I might not. I told the agent that I may not need to have it removed and he explained that in order for it not to be a pre-existing condition it would have to be removed.

So, even if a brain tumor does not clinically need to be removed, in order to not have it be a pre-existing condition I would have to have brain surgery to have it be removed.

Can someone please make it make sense? 😳

I mostly stay home with the kids and work part-time with Dan, but I told him that maybe I need to look into a part-time job at Costco or Trader Joe’s just to have access to affordable health insurance. I mostly kidding because I literally don’t have a spare hour in the day, but I did work at the YMCA eight hours a week when my kids were little just for health benefits.

Medishare told us that I could get on their plan right now, but they would not cover anything related to the brain tumor for five years. At least that gives us an end date. But I’ve also heard nightmare stories about Medishare not covering cancer and all sorts of other huge diagnoses.

I have always felt like health insurance was a big huge Ponzi scheme - and these last few months have been absolutely eye-opening to me.

So tonight, I’m holding tight to one of my favorite Bible studies & trusting that the Lord has a plan for all the things to work out for the good - even in the depths of my current frustration & myriad of unknowns.

Generally speaking, I pretty much consider myself a Texan at this stage of the game.

I lived in Ohio and Michigan for about 30 years, then Virginia for four and now I’ve been here in Texas for eight.

I’ve gotten quite a bit more used to Texas customs and southern accents. I swore that when I left the Midwest, I’d never use the term “y’all” - but indeed I have.

All of that to say, I was at one of my kids baseball games the other day, and one of the parents kept yelling, “Let’s go non”.

I kept thinking to myself what the name “Non”
could be short for.

Then, I thought maybe it was a last name.

We were playing in an All-Star game, so I wasn’t terribly familiar with all of the players.

Then suddenly it hit me… the jersey number was nine. She was yelling “Nine” but with the southern drawl, it sounded like, “Non” to me.

😂

Maybe that’s one thing about moving to the south - you don’t quite pick up the southern drawl unless you were born & bred!

We’ve seen a pretty big uptick in emails, phone calls, texts & inquiries about ticks lately.

No pun intended.

It is indeed tick season here in Texas - but there are lots of preventative measures that you can take.

Keep your grass short & don’t wander through high grasses.

Check your legs & ankles regularly.

Check your pets.

Wear anti-tick sprays (Badger has a great one that we carry or you can make your own).

And if you are bitten… be sure to remove the whole tick. There are lots of helpful videos about how to do that. It’s a good idea to keep the tick in a bag - or there are places that you can send it for testing if needed.

Wash the area with soap & water - you can also apply rubbing alcohol if desired.

Keep an eye out for swelling or the typical bulls-eye type rash, fever & body aches.

Dr Dan can prescribe antibiotics if symptoms appear, but it’s not usually needed - and he stresses to patients that there’s no need to panic!

It’s 217° with bright sunshine in North Dallas.

I’ve got a toddler who wants to go home.

Both morale & snacks are running low as we move into game three for the day (game five of the weekend).

Is it bedtime yet? 😂

Twelve Years…

Dan & I met in November of 2013.

We were engaged in February & married in May, after knowing one another just six months.

I was a single widowed mom to four and Dan a surgery resident (who looking back probably had no idea what he was getting himself into 😂).

We managed to come together in the least likely of ways - & over the years, we have had to overcome more than we ever could have dreamed.

We sold both of our houses in Ohio & headed to Southern Virginia for four years, with four kids, for Dan to serve in the navy at Portsmouth Medical Center.

We didn’t know a soul and had no family support down there. We had three more kids in our four years before heading west to Texas - with three babies all still in diapers.

I think some of our kids still have PTSD from that drive!

We moved here for Dr Dan to do surgery, and somehow ended up on a little homestead doing more natural / functional family medicine.

Somewhere along the way we picked up an eighth baby & then a grandson.

Grandpa Dan & Grandma Morgan… over here celebrating twelve years.

To say that it’s been a wild ride is an understatement.

God has absolutely been the rock that has held us together during all the ups & downs.

Our faith has grown stronger through an endless need for Jesus to lead us & guide us - when we had no idea which way to go.

He is faithful like that ❤️

Thankful for a dozen years & hopeful for at least a dozen more. God is good!

It was a hot day for softball in Southlake!

Holy smokes there are some INSANE houses down that way!?

We passed houses that looked like castles - one was on Zillow for $25,000,000!?
