Young Man - They told me you can help me find work, can you? I'll do anything, I just want to work.
Old Man - Yes I can help you find work come with me.
He took the young man with him and they performed lawn work and helped someone move along with two other young men. At the days end they were paid. The old man split the money in three.
Young Man - Excuse me sir but you didn't pay me.
Old Man - I'm sorry but I didn't plan to. You said and I quote, "They told me you can help me find work, can you? I'll do anything, I just want to work". You never said you wanted to be paid for it. Just that you wanted to do it. Come back tomorrow and we will discuss pay.
Young Man - ok, but was my work not good enough to be paid for it.
Old Man – It was great work? However, I cannot pay you because I didn’t plan on paying you. I only planned on making sure you received what you asked for. Would you like to work and be paid for it? If so meet me at the same place tomorrow.
The next day the young man arrives bright and early.
Young Man – Being that I'm new I can show you my worth. I just need half of what they make. That's fine.
Old Man - Ok let's get started.
They went to the junk yard where they cleaned the grounds and rounded up parts. General labor for the day. At days end they were paid 700$. The old man paid the young man $100 & split the remainder in increments of $200.
Young Man - That doesn't seem fair. I worked harder than them today. I mean I performed all the heavy lifting and so forth.
Old Man - life isn't fair young man. You told me yesterday that you would take half of what they got. So that's what I paid you. I kept my word did I not? You’re correct, you performed most of the heavy lifting. However, in the real world especially in the corporate America you will find that the higher up the food chain you go the more you get paid and the less you do, as it becomes your job to observe and monitor the works of others. Trust me though young man. Before one gets paid more to do less understand that he/she at one time did more., I will see you tomorrow.
The next day the young man arrived bright and early.
Young Man - Good morning sir I'm ready to work.
Old Man - let's get to work.
They worked all day doing various things. Then came days end and they made $1000. The money was split it in four. Each of the workers relieved $333. The old mad paid himself $1
Young Man – Why did you pay yourself so little after working so hard?
Old Man - I usually don't work at all. I have only been with you these three days to introduce you to these men and calculate your work ethic. I don't tend to work with them. However, whenever I bring a new man on I work with you all. That way you can never say that I'm not willing to do anything that I ask of you. It creates trust.
Young Man - I understand.
Old Man - ok, but let me inform you of a few things before I go. You probably wondered
Why is this old man doing this to me? Paying me nothing, paying me less and now paying me more?
This is a lesson in success. A lesson in goal setting and in attaining those goals. I knew you wanted to work bad and had a drive because you sought me out to work. What you failed to do was plan. You failed to have a plan. These are the questions you didn't ask yourself or prepare for before seeking me out
What type of work will I be doing?
What is the value of that work?
What is my value in terms of that work?
What is the timeline for me to achieve the ultimate goal of being compensated like everyone else in?
How much work do I have to put in and for how long before I am compensated like everyone else?
Once I'm paid and treated like everyone else what will I then do?
You had a goal of getting to me to attain work and you succeeded. None the less because you failed to plan. You felt as if your work was not good enough or as if you failed yourself in some capacity. You felt as if your work and worth were not good enough because you were paid less you felt less successful.
Worth, self-worth, success, achievement, knowledge none of these things are tangible objects. Their mindsets. Once you grasp these mindsets you will never again fail to plan. Thereby never allowing yourself to deem yourself as worthless, a failure or as if you were worth less than any other person. After enduring this you will always be able to look back and draw from the knowledge of this week so that you may be able to better handle it when these situations again themselves to you.
A goal without a plan is a wish son & A wish without a Genie is nothing.
Don't allow yourself to sit in the stagnation and company of nothingness. Always plan for your successes, your achievements and beyond them. That was the lesson. You have a good day.
Young Man- When will I see you again?
Old Man - Most likely never, but it's ok. You have everything you need from me. Now you have to instill it in yourself. My coming around again would only serve to enable you. I don't want you to be enabled I simply want you to be Knowledgeable & ABLE. ABLE to do any and everything you put your mind to doing & Knowledgeable enough to understand that that is possible.
