2 cans refrigerated cinnamon rolls
Additional flour for pressing (optional)
For the apple filling layer:
4 cups apple pie filling
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
For the cream cheese layer:
8 ounces regular cream cheese, softened to room temperature
½ cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup frozen whipped topping (such as Cool Whip), thawed
For the topping:
Caramel sauce
Instructions
Preheat the oven and prepare the baking dish

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Place the oven rack in the middle position.

Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray. Make sure to cover the bottom and all four corners.

Prepare the cinnamon roll layers

Open both cans of refrigerated cinnamon rolls. Do not bake them. Remove the rolls from the cans and separate them. Set aside the small icing packets that came with the rolls (you can use them later as a drizzle if you like, but they are not needed for the recipe).

Using your fingertips and the palm of your hand, press each cinnamon roll into a flat, wide disk about ¼ inch thick. The dough will be soft and slightly sticky. If it sticks to your fingers, dust your hands lightly with flour.

You will need enough flattened rolls to make two full layers across the 9x13-inch dish. Press some rolls together to cover any gaps — overlapping edges slightly is fine because the dough will rise and fill in spaces as it bakes.

Layer 1: First cinnamon roll base

Arrange half of the flattened cinnamon rolls in the bottom of the greased baking dish. Press them down so they form a single, even layer that covers the entire bottom. Overlap the edges slightly to prevent holes.

Layer 2: Spiced apples

Spoon the 4 cups of apple pie filling onto the first cinnamon roll layer. Spread it evenly using the back of a spoon.

Sprinkle the 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and ½ teaspoon of ground nutmeg over the apple filling. Tilt the dish gently to help the spices settle.

Make the cream cheese layer

In a medium mixing bowl, place the 8 ounces of softened cream cheese. Beat with a hand mixer on medium speed for 1 minute until completely smooth and free of lumps.

Add the ½ cup of powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Beat for another 30 seconds until the mixture looks creamy and pale.

Add the 1 cup of thawed whipped topping. Fold it in gently with a rubber spatula — do not use the mixer. Fold by scooping from the bottom of the bowl and turning the mixture over until no white streaks remain. The final texture should be thick, spreadable, and smooth.

Layer 3: Half the cream cheese mixture

Spread half of the cream cheese mixture (about 1 cup) evenly over the spiced apple layer. Use an offset spatula or the back of a spoon to reach the edges.

Layer 4: Second cinnamon roll layer

Arrange the remaining flattened cinnamon rolls over the cream cheese layer. Press them down gently so they sit flat and cover most of the surface. Overlap edges as needed.

Layer 5: Remaining cream cheese mixture

Spread the rest of the cream cheese mixture over the second cinnamon roll layer. Smooth it out to the edges of the dish.

Layer 6: Extra apple topping (optional but recommended)

If you have any leftover apple pie filling, spoon it over the top cream cheese layer. If not, simply move to the next step.

Bake the lasagna

Place the baking dish on the middle rack of the preheated oven, uncovered.

Bake for 35 minutes. After 25 minutes, check the top: The cream cheese layer should be lightly golden at the edges, and the cinnamon roll layers should have puffed up around the sides of the dish.

Continue baking for the full 35 minutes. The center should look set (not jiggly) and the edges should be bubbly and golden brown.

Cool and finish

Remove the baking dish from the oven. Let it cool on a wire rack for 10 to 15 minutes. This resting time allows the cream cheese layer to set so your slices will hold their shape.

Drizzle caramel sauce generously over the top. Let the caramel run down into the cracks between the puffed rolls.

Slice into 12 squares. Serve warm for the best gooey texture.
