A little comparison of chemical termination of our early cereal rye vs. roller crimping termination. Both fields were planted with the drill at the same time yesterday. Normally we need to wait for the rye to flower to roller crimp successfully but we don’t like waiting until June to plant our soybeans. Our trial here, used Gardiner rye (a newer earlier variety) and we plan to allow the soybeans to emerge before we roller crimp. The drill knocked the rye down pretty good but I expect it to straighten back up to some degree and not die. All this to gain some additional yield potential and reduce chemical usage. If we can plant earlier and reduce chemical w**d control while gaining soil quality, we have taken some big leaps forward in our efforts to increase biodiversity and eliminate erosion. Additionally, we are building on organic matter content and all of the benefits that come along with.
