Meet Pearl. She is a 20+ year old mini donkey and one of my favorite little clients. Pearl’s owner called me to trim this sweetheart because her farrier was retiring. Historically, Pearl was sedated at each trimming appointment. I requested to work on her without any medication to see if I could handle her through slow adaptive training adjusting to her personality and physical needs. Upon meeting her, her feet were in despair and overgrown. Her legs were clearly not in line and she had a lot of discomfort. I was able to trim her a bit at the first appointment, but there was a lot more hoof to go. I came back the following weeks, taking more hoof each appointment and earning Pearl’s trust. Allowing her limbs to adjust back to a more normal condition each time. Pearl never once needed to be medicated at any point. The owner reports her little donkey who used to only stayclose to the barn laying down due to pain, was now walking all over her many acre farm l. Joining her as she gardens, playing with the sheep she shares the barn with and is running around like the donkey she used to be. Pearl is enjoying life again after 10 years of disability. She is a success story and why I love my job. 💕
