We had ram lamb born yesterday to Rainbow Apple Pria. I came home from a trip into Portland at about 5:45 yesterday afternoon, and stopped to check for lambs. Nothing unusual in the pasture, no sign of any new lamb activity. At 6:00, John went outside and noticed one of our yearling ewes licking something and realized it was a new lamb. Yes, it really does happen that fast. I'm not sure we've ever caught sight of a lamb that new, and I was worried about how wobbly he was. An hour later, however, I went out and saw him standing tall and proud, in a stance that told me (even at that distance) that it was a ram lamb. Mom was still licking him, but he was starting to look annoyed by her effort. Since this was a first-time mom, we decided to err on the side of letting them bond in peace and didn't go out to tag and photograph until this morning. He immediately imprinted on us and we had a hard time getting him back to his mom since he would follow us everywhere (even climbing through a fence to stay under our feet) and mom wouldn't get too close to us although she'd stand at a distance and call to him. We managed, though, and he's back with his mom in the pasture now.
I'm having trouble uploading the picture right now, but I'll come back and post a photo shortly. :)
