Have you ever seen such massive garlic cloves?! This is not elephant garlic!

Today I got 200 cloves of garlic in the ground. It's a little late, but the weather has been so wild. We went from high-70s to a hard freeze in the span of a week, so it was hard for me to gauge the right time to plant.

As usual, I had my little helpers next to me every step of the way. Gardening with kids is always a lesson in letting go for me. I am beyond methodical and tend to get a little stressed out when things don't go to plan. And what are 2 and 4 year olds good for if not changing up the plan a bit? So my garlic grid is a little off and there are a few errant cloves planted...somewhere. It will all work out. The important thing is that I got it done and that the girls actually want to help. I'm going to want their help when they're older and more capable, so I'd better encourage their willingness now.

Also, check out that little peach tree in the middle of my garlic bed! I found a pit while I was planting garlic last year and shoved it in the ground along with the cloves. And here she is! Standing a proud 3 feet tall. She's a beaut.

When your elderberry umbels are bigger than your head! I've never seen such a big bunch, have you?

I've got these berries in the freezer (to make picking them easier - supposedly they just pop off the stems that way) and I'll be making syrup with them tonight or tomorrow. Elderberries make a delicious syrup that we use to help ward off nasties during cold and flu season. I'll keep you updated on the process! Let me know what you use to keep yourself and your family healthy during the colder months. I love learning about other folk remedies.

Today, in micro-harvests. We're waiting on our tomatoes to come in and I forgot to plant cucumbers this year, so this is what the garden is currently offering. It's a good thing I like squash! Are you growing a garden this year? What are you currently harvesting?

It's hard to capture the enormity of this squash vine in a picture, but I've paced one of the vines at about 15 feet already. It's a volunteer, born from tossing sad squashes from last year's harvest off the kitchen stoop and onto a pile of rabbit p**p. There are a couple of others like it in my kitchen jungle and they are producing some really tasty and beautiful frankensquashes. *

The calendula is going gangbusters and I just love the variety of blooms that pop up. We will be drying the flowers and infusing oil to create lovely salves and creams.
