⚠️ EXTREME HEAT ALERT — 110°+ HEAT INDEX ☀️🐔

When the heat index gets this high, keeping chickens comfortable becomes more than a normal daily routine — you have to actively manage the heat.

Here at 17 Acres, these are four things we’re focusing on today:

🌳 SHADE — Making sure the flock has places to get completely out of the direct sun.

💧 FRESH WATER — Keeping plenty of clean, cool water available and checking it throughout the day.

💨 AIRFLOW — Good ventilation is especially important around coops and sheltered areas where heat can build up.

👀 WATCH & OBSERVE — We’re paying attention to the birds themselves. Heavy panting, wings held away from the body, weakness, or unusual behavior can be signs that a bird is struggling with the heat.

One thing raising chickens has taught us: you can’t control the weather, but you can change how you manage your flock because of it.

🐔 What are you doing to keep your chickens comfortable during this extreme heat?

Drop your tips below — somebody else raising chickens might benefit from what you’ve learned.

🔥 110°+ HEAT INDEX HOW ARE YOU MANAGING YOUR FLOCK? 🐔☀️

Extreme heat means changing the routine.

Here at 17 Acres, our birds still have the freedom to range, but on days like this we’re paying extra attention to fresh water, shade, airflow, and the behavior of the flock.

We’re watching for heavy panting, wings held away from the body, lethargy, or any bird that just isn’t acting like itself.

Free range doesn’t mean hands-off. When the weather changes, the way we manage the flock has to change with it.
