Footloose Farm

Footloose Farm ☝🏻 God first. 👩🏼‍⚕️ Veterinarian/family owned and operated farm. 🦄 Breeder of unicorns, the Gypsy I wouldn't dream of boarding anywhere else!" - Elise H.

Footloose Farm is a 42 acre family owned and ran facility that breeds Gypsy Vanner horses. It is owned by the Milligan-Hardesty family and is a life long dream come true! We have owned horses for over 15 years and we see our equines as part of our family. The only two things expected from each person that comes through the gate, is one: drop the stresses of life at the gate and two: respect our fa

mily members and barn hands as you will be shown the same respect. Personal statements of boarders at FLF:

"When I came to the Florence area for school, I didn’t want to leave my horse at home. I have taken lessons at many different farms over the years, but Footloose Farm stands out as being particularly welcoming and enjoyable. Everyone on the property was friendly; there was no “barn drama” that I have experienced at other farms. I was lucky enough to go to my first few shows with my horse, and I could not have asked for a better group to show and ride with. Before my time at Footloose Farm, I had never worked with Gypsy Vanner horses, but the studs were very gentle and easy to work with, they were good ambassadors of their breed. Overall, this farm is great if you want a place to board, ride or show. They are very accommodating for towards all breeds, ages and disciplines. By far one of the best barns I have had the pleasure of working with." - Cameron B. "Since I began boarding my horse at Footloose Farms I have been very satisfied! Nikki and her crew are extremely accommodating and promptly available if ever needed! Their knowledge of horses, has been very helpful, as I am a first time horse owner.

After a great deal of thought, we have made the difficult decision to significantly reduce the number of mares we breed this year, and we are carefully evaluating what the future of our breeding program will look like moving forward.

For more than 13 years, we have been dedicated to producing quality Gypsy Vanner horses with an emphasis on health, temperament, conformation, and versatility. Breeding horses has never been a business venture for us. It has been a passion, a lifestyle, and a commitment to preserving and improving a breed we love with every fiber of our being.

However, the horse industry, and the people in this breed in particular, has changed dramatically in recent years. The market has become increasingly challenging, with fewer buyers actively purchasing horses and many quality horses remaining unsold for extended periods of time. At the same time, the direction of the breed has evolved in ways that sometimes differ from the goals and values that originally drew us to Gypsy Vanners.

As responsible breeders, we believe it is important to recognize these changes and make thoughtful decisions rather than continuing to produce foals simply because we can. Every foal deserves a loving, committed home, and every breeding should have purpose and intention behind it.

This decision is not one we have made lightly. We remain incredibly proud of the horses we have bred, the families who have welcomed them into their lives, and the relationships we have built throughout the years. We are grateful for the support of our customers, friends, and fellow horse enthusiasts who have followed our journey.

While our breeding numbers may be smaller, our commitment to quality will never change. We will continue to focus on producing exceptional horses when we do choose to breed, always putting the welfare of our horses and the future of the breed first.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Footloose Farm over the years. We look forward to seeing what the future holds, even if the path forward looks a little different than it once did. 💕

Seeing the story this morning about the three horses that were stabbed at a barrel race in Las Vegas is heartbreaking. No matter the circumstances, it serves as a sobering reminder of something that exists in nearly every part of life: competition can be a powerful motivator, but when it becomes fueled by jealousy, resentment, or obsession, it can become destructive.

Competition is everywhere. I remember in undergrad feeling like it was a constant battle just to get into veterinary school. It was often a dog-eat-dog environment where everyone was trying to gain an edge. Then you finally get accepted and think you've made it and can breathe. Nope. Vet school brought an entirely new level of competition. Then you graduate and think surely that chapter is over. Nope again. Whether it's veterinary medicine, horse breeding, horse showing, business ownership, athletics, or countless other professions, or heck even being a mom, competition never really disappears.

The truth is, healthy competition can be a wonderful thing. It pushes us to improve, learn, work harder, and become better versions of ourselves. It can inspire excellence and innovation. But there is a line.

When competition turns into an obsession with beating someone else rather than improving yourself, when another person's success feels like your failure, when jealousy starts taking root in your heart, that's when problems begin. It can lead to bitterness, gossip, sabotage, and in the most extreme cases, intentional harm.

One of the hardest lessons I've learned is that someone else's success does not diminish my own. There is room for multiple people to succeed. There is room for multiple good veterinarians, multiple good breeders, multiple good trainers, and multiple good horses. We don't have to tear others down to build ourselves up.

Maybe stories like this should cause all of us to pause and examine our own hearts. Not because most people would ever commit such an act, but because the seeds of jealousy, envy, and unhealthy comparison can creep into any of our lives if we're not careful. Are we cheering for others? Are we celebrating their accomplishments? Are we competing to be better than we were yesterday, or are we consumed with trying to beat everyone around us?

At the end of the day, our character will always matter more than any ribbon, title, degree, paycheck, trophy, or social media following.

Win with integrity. Lose with grace. Celebrate others. And never allow competition to cost you your humanity. 💕

Why is this boy still sitting?!?! You are truly missing out on a serious show prospect with a dam that is known to produce WINNERS (both in the show ring and life!) 🥰🫶🏻 PM if interested in more information.
