Yesterday, Maryland Governor Hogan announced the “Stay-At-Home” executive order.

How does the order apply to the horse industry?

The care and feeding of livestock is regarded at Agriculture and deemed essential.

March 30, 2020

Guidance for Food Supply Chain During “Stay at Home” Order

Governor Larry Hogan has issued an executive order requiring Marylanders to “Stay at Home,” effective 8 p.m March 30, 2020. As the state moves into the next phase of its efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, essential industries are encouraged to continue operations while implementing best practices designed to protect employees, customers and the general public.

Agriculture and food-related businesses remain essential, however individual companies are asked to make an honest assessment as to whether their operation is essential to public health and safety. Businesses that are not directly linked to public health and safety should immediately scale back their operations, eliminate foot traffic, end curbside pick-up and move to delivery only. Any workers that are able to do their job from home should do so immediately and continue until the governor lifts the current order. Essential workers may continue to travel to and from work as needed.

Maryland Horse Industry Board

Statement to Horse Industry in Response to Executive Order on Non-Essential Businesses

Governor Larry Hogan ordered all non-essential businesses to close by 5 p.m. March 23, 2020. While farms and the agriculture and food supply chains are considered essential, commercial and recreational riding centers and stables should prepare to suspend their operations to the public. Horse care, boarding facilities, and other operations that provide self-care boarding for privately-owned horses are considered essential and should continue operations while implementing safety measures that promote social distancing and other best practices.

See the Maryland Department of Health and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information. Any questions related to specific businesses can be sent to [email protected]
