Kale season is well underway; and these brassica greens will get even sweeter with the cold nights in the forecast.

We are currently harvesting curly kale (Starbor or Winterbor depending on the day) and Red Russian Kale. Toscano Kale should work into the rotation later in the month as well.

Farmstand will be open daily through November 22nd, and then we may feature a few bonus pop up days before the King Farm moves into the blue shed for the deep winter sometime in December.

It’s the season for spice > we have four successions of arugula planted this fall and are currently harvesting planting number two.

Each should give us 2-3 cuts before fading out or going to seed.

We don’t target a baby leaf; rather we harvest a more robust larger leaf with a sweet stem. Size, spice, and heat will vary depending on which succession we are harvesting and what stage of growth it is at when cut.

Pretty much shifted all of our arugula plantings over to Esmee at this point.

Have a succession ready to plant in one of the fieldhouse next week and a final seeding in greenhouse to seed next week. We elect to use transplants for these fieldhouse crops cause it allows us to push whatever summer crop is in the house to the end before jumping in with starts rather than seeds.

3 seeds/cell in 128s - only works if you transplant young and don’t mind a mature leaf. Would definitely not work if we were growing baby leaf. Leave that to the mechanized operations with scale.

Rotating back into our second & final planting of Gatsbi Little Gem for the next week or so; think these guys have earned a spot in our fall rotations going forward. Better size than Newham fits our production better.

We trialed at 6”, 9”, & 1’ in row spacing to see how space impacted their growth, harvest, and field holding capacity.

Think 9” is the sweet spot for us. Though on 3 rows per bed they definitely got pretty dirty from our September nor’easter.

Frost tonight? Definitely the right conditions as winds die down, low dew points, and radiational cooling allows temps to dive.

Might be the end of our brilliant basil season; though we may spend some time covering a few frost sensitive beds this afternoon… tbd.

This is right in target for our average first frost here on the Southcoast which is usually first week of October give or take a week.

We’ll probably prioritize covering our late October lettuce crop to extend the harvest season on heads.

Fall > Spring CSA registration info is coming this wed/thur with our first distribution next week, on Friday October 16th.

Seasons are changing…

Beautiful harvest morning & we have heaps of fall veggies available at the farmstand. Highlights include fall kale starting to sweeten up, top notch radishes in abundance, pinto gold potatoes, full flavor (aka Bold) arugula, & a few other surprises…

Still drying out from last week’s nor’easter; today’s sunshine and lower dew points will definitely help.

Took the canopies down for the stand tonight; heaps of veggies stacked in the farmstand for folks seeking some crunch & flavor on Saturday. We’ll be open all weekend; managed to spend most of today harvesting an abundance for you.

Lettuce mix on the horizon… might show up this week; definitely will sometime next week. Heads are growing well this fall as well; abundance of lettuce 2026 continues.

Saturday September 19th farmstand update: we have heaps and heaps of veggies for you!

Including a return to greens season featuring arugula, dandelion greens, konatsuna, pac choi, red Russian kale, and Swiss Chard.

A weekend pick of zucchini and Mountain Magic tomatoes; hot peppers for some zing, abundant beets, carrots, and potatoes… celery once we finish posting on social media, lettuce heads, basil, cilantro, dill, parsley, sage, and thyme. Fennel, scallions, butternut squash, sunshine kabocha squash and a few other surprises.

… radishes will make their triumphant return mid week.

Our tomato season is on its last legs; so they will not be available everyday.

Greens are coming back for the fall and leading off is the terrific (yet perhaps unfamiliar) Green River Komatsuna. Komatsuna is a close cousin of pac choi and can be used in a similar manner; steamed, stir-fry, and such. We’ll have Komatsuna in rotation for a couple of weeks and again later in October. Choi is also currently in rotation as well as Red Russian Kale… tatsoi and curly kale will both slide into rotation toward the end of the month.

3.5 inches of rain on Sunday might necessitate a thorough wash in your kitchen.
