“Nothing so needs reforming as other people’s habits. Fanatics will never learn that, though it be written in letters of gold across the sky. It is the prohibition that makes anything precious.” - Mark Twain

Today we celebrate the ratification of the 21st Amendment to the US Constitution! This amendment repeals the 18th Amendment which brought about prohibition in the Unites States.📜

Zoller's Resealable Beer Bottle Cap

This resealable beer bottle cap is from the Zoller Brewery, which operated from 1935 to 1943, at 1801 W. Third Street.

The Zoller Brewing Company succeeded the Independent Brewing Company late in 1934. For months workmen were busy remodeling the plant until there was hardly a single piece of the old brewing equipment remaining. Officials of the company stated that the finest beer making equipment and the most efficient methods of beer brewing, aging and handling known to the industry had been installed. The first batch of Zoller's Famous Beer was brewed on February 28, 1935, but it was many weeks later before it would be tasted by the public. The beer would have to stand in giant Cyprus tanks until it aged to just the right mellowness before it could be kegged or bottled for distribution.

Zoller's Famous Beer went on sale for the first time in all Quad-City taverns on Wednesday, May 1, 1935.

Looks like the future is bright for malt.

An interview with Ron Silberstein of Admiral Maltings in Alameda, California, provides a compelling case study for the future of beer.

Hello, all. We just wanted to give you folks an update on the brewery and how things are going.
Since WQAD ran our story a few weeks back, we have been swamped with emails, letters, and phone calls. We are still going through all of them and may not have responded as quickly as we’d like. If you sent us a message and we haven’t responded back, we apologize and ask for a reminder message.
The story that Jonathan Turner wrote for the Quad-City Times and The Dispatch / Rock Island Argus was picked up by the Associated Press. This has brought a national spotlight on our brewery and we’ve been fielding questions and phone calls from folks all around the US.
Andrew Arnold, the proprietor, has taken a small part time job at Geneseo Brewing Co. to learn more about the brewery business, so that the incubator at Independent Malting Company can be solid. GBC uses a 5 barrel system for their brewery, which will be roughly the same size as our incubator on the second floor. The folks out there have been great to Andrew.
We are currently pulling the museum side of the brewery together. We have sent in our paperwork for a grant with the Smithsonian and have reached out the Lost Lagers project, which will bring a bit more attention to the brewery. We have started working with our archivist to set up how we are going to catalog the items that have started coming in from collectors. We have also reached out to a few companies that specialize in museum design to setup how our museum will look, feel, and operate.
We are as excited as you are to open Independent Malting Company. This is a huge project. We would like to say “Thank You” to everyone that has supported us, been patient with us, and collaborated with us. It’s been a slow process, but we’re almost there.
🍻

What an amazing story. When digging through old museum items, the old Senate Ale recipe was found! 📜🍺

Heurich House Museum, owner of the Brewmaster’s Castle near Dupont Circle, has been able to bring to life the historic Senate beer, which was once one of the most popular beers in the city.

The History of Beer in the Quad Cities
presented by MIKE WENTHE, Local Brewery Historian
Wednesday, October 2nd – 6:30 p.m.
Galena Brewing Co. Ale House
1354 River Drive, Moline, Illinois

Mike Wenthe of Taylor Ridge will be sharing some historical stokes of the ear on local breweries. He has spent his working life in the distribution of beer, wines, and spirits. From his collection of brewery memorabilia, he will inform and entertain us with bottles and crates to photographs and signs. The first
known brewery in the area started in 1847 by Peter and August Littig from France. Ignatz Huber joined them and bought them out in 1854. We’ll join the 20th century with the Huber family and descendants stayed in the business.
Join us for a beer and some local brewing history.
