‼️💭FAFO FARM FACTOID FRIDAY💭‼️

On this weeks FAFO Farm factoid Friday, let dive into dahlias!

Dahlias are easy to grow bloomers that are native to Mexico and the official flower of San Francisco and Seattle. Famous for their diverse, “dinner plate” sizes and vibrant colors! They are actually edible root tubers that were eaten as a staple food crop by the Aztecs!

Speaking of the Aztecs, they used the dahlias long, hollow stems as water pipes and natural straws! They also was used for early medication, using the tubers to treat epilepsy and the petals to heal skin infections and bug bites! Along with before insulin was discovered, diabetics used a starch extracted from dahlia tubers to help balance their blood sugar.

The flowers were named after a Swedish botanist from the 18th century named Anders Dahl. In the language of flowers, dahlias symbolize eternal love, elegance, and dignity.

We love dahlias so much that we are currently planting them all over the farm. We can’t wait to see how they turn out!

We hope you all have a wonderful Friday and an even better weekend!

‼️FAFO FARM INTRODUCTION MONDAY‼️

On this weeks FAFO Farm introduction Monday, we introduce to you, “no name”!

No that will not be her name, we will be having another name contest for this beautiful girl, therefore keep an eye out for that upcoming post to enter in your suggested names!

Anyways, back to “no name”, she is a dun highland/ angus mix. Her dam, is FAFO FARMS Eve, and her sire is, FAFO FARMS Blaze! She is a very adventurous baby, she loves to run in her pasture and she loves to hang out with her buddy JV! She was born on the farm on Memorial Day, 05/25/26. She is a high spirited calf that we are so happy to have on our farm!

We hope you all have a lovely Monday and an even better week!

‼️💭FAFO FARM FACTOID FRIDAY💭‼️

What’s the difference between and bulb, tuber, corm, and rhizomes?

Starting off with a BULBS. The anatomy of a bulb is made of layered, fleshy modified leaves attached to a hard basal petal (the bottom where the roots grow) that surround a center flower bud. Their interior is layered and concentric ( like a cross section of an onion)
Examples of plants that come from bulbs are tulips 🌷, daffodils 🌼, lilies, garlic 🧄, and onions 🧅

Next are the TUBERS! The anatomy of a tuber is enlarged portions of a stem (or sometimes roots) used to store energy. They do not have a tunic, basal plate, or distinct layers. Their interior is solid, fleshy, and uniform. Their growth is a little different as they have growth points or nodes knows as “eyes” (like on a potato 🥔) from which shoots emerge. Examples of plants that come from tubers are potatoes 🥔, dahlias, caladiums, and begonias!

After tubers are CORMS! The anatomy of a corn is swollen, modified underground stems. They often have a papery outer layer but lack internal fleshy scales. Their interior is solid, starchy, and uniform throughout. Examples of plants that come from corms are crocuses, gladioli, freesias, and elephant ears!

Last but not least we have RHIZOMES! The anatomy of a rhizome is thickened, fleshy plant stem that grows horizontally along or just beneath the soils surface. Their interior is solid, root-like, and typically branching. Examples of plants that come from rhizomes are bearded iris, ginger 🫚, canna lilies, and bamboo🎋

Did you learn something new today?

We hope you have an amazing Friday and an even better weekend!!🤗

Sometimes farming asks more of you than you expected to give. 🌾

Tuesday, our sweet Marshmallow delivered a bull calf. And we lost him. There’s no easy way to say it — it’s just the hard truth that comes with raising animals. You prepare as best you can, you show up, and sometimes it still isn’t enough.

What people don’t always talk about is how cows grieve. Marshmallow was given time to say goodbye to her calf, along with S’mores her 2 year old daughter who has stayed by her side as she grieves. The level of grief this momma cow is feeling is the most heartbreaking thing to witness on a farm. Cows form real bonds, and their grief is real. We give her the space when she wants it, extra love and attention when she is ready and time she needs, and we stay close and monitor her physical and emotional health as he processes.

We started our breeding program back in 2022, and in that time — through every calf, every late night, every anxious watch — this is the first loss we’ve experienced. We don’t take that lightly. We feel incredibly grateful for the blessing of that record, even as we sit with the sadness of this moment.

This is farming. The joy and the heartbreak live side by side on the same land. We wouldn’t trade it — but we won’t pretend the hard days don’t hurt, either.

Rest easy, little one. ❤️🐂
