As a chef I would add salt and spices to flavor my dishes as a farmer I add microbes and worm castings. To make sure I have the most microbial rich castings I produce them myself in my living room right next to my seed station. This bin was started with 2 pounds of worms and now has more than doubled in population they are really pushing out the castings. I add them to my seed starting mix, transplant soil mix, and I am starting to make a slurry and soak my transplants into the mix before setting outside.
