Sweet Iris Farms Great Pyrenees Puppies

Sweet Iris Farms Great Pyrenees Puppies Great Pyrenees bred and trained for working livestock and poultry. Frequently Asked Questions

•When can the puppies go home? I no longer meet part way. NO!

After they are eight weeks old.

•Where are you located? Dawson, West Virginia

•Can you meet part way for pick-up? Puppy owners must come to the farm for pick up.

•Is the deposit refundable? No, it is not.

•Do Great Pyrenese make good pets? Yes they do. They just need plenty of exercise, as they are bred to patrol large areas.

•How big do they get? On average my line tends to have females w

eighing in around 80+ pounds. Males can be 100+ pounds.

•Do they bark constantly? Pups will often bark a lot until they learn what is and isn't worth barking at. They will get to the point that when they bark, you know something's up.

•Does their fur need shaved in the summer? Do not shave them. They have double coats that insulate against cold as well as heat. They're coats may not ever grow back properly if shaved.

•Do these dogs kill predators? They sometimes will, but this breed is more of an intimidator than a fighter. They will work to ward off trouble by patrolling and barking before resorting to a fight.

• What are their personalities like? They are very intelligent, very loyal, and affectionate dogs. They are independent thinkers and can be a challenge at times, but they would do just about anything to please you.

•Are they registered? No they are not. I started breeding for working abilities after bad experiences with registered pyres who were bred simply for that reason. Not to say there are not great working, registered pyres out there.

•Do they shed? They will blow their coats in the spring, meaning they will lose a layer of fur nearly at once when warm weather hits. Their coats normally only need a little bit of brushing during this time as the fur mostly comes out on its own.

•How much are your puppies? The puppies are $650 each. $150 holds puppy of choice until pick up upon which $500 is due. The puppies will have all their dewormings, vaccinations, and will be flea treated. Deposits aren't due until pups are born and you've chosen one. Deposits are non refundable so make sure your ready to take on a puppy before committing.

After a stretch of really hot days, today’s breeze felt so good.

Watching the Pyrs just go about their business on the farm always reminds me how well they’re built for this life—their coats actually insulate them in both heat and cold. They don’t need to be shaved down for summer like some people think. All they really need is shade, good airflow, and plenty of fresh water available all the time.

Simple setup, and they handle the seasons just fine.

Same s*x aggression where?

Four of my females—ages 9, 7, 4, and 10 months—sharing space, working livestock, and living as a pack. Two are of my lines and two are not. And that's just four pictured of my seven pyres, lol.

I see this idea come up a lot—that you “can’t” keep multiple females (or males) together because they’ll fight. But why does that reputation exist? In most cases, it comes down to poor breeding choices and poor training, not some unavoidable rule about LGDs.

Yeah, no. It shouldn't be that way. Find dogs with the right temperament. Spend time bonding with each individual. Spend time with the pack. Establish yourself as leader so they don't feel the need to compete with eachother for that position.

LGDs can and should be able to actually live and work together.

We honestly thought we were dealing with a phantom pregnancy… turns out there were two little puppies hiding in there the whole time. 🤍

I waited a while before posting them because I wanted to make sure they were healthy, nursing well, and doing good before getting getting everyone excited. Thankfully, they’re both doing great.

Two tiny little girls. 🐾

I may keep one, but I haven’t decided yet if this is the right time for me to retain another puppy. For now, I’m just enjoying watching them grow and feeling grateful they’re here at all.
