The shortening of days and cooling weather transitions the leaves to many beautiful colors. It is always fun to see where the trees are at in their transition to dormancy relative to the transition to daylight savings time.

Cameo apple spotlight.

This apple is a mid-October pick that tastes better 10 days after it is harvested. It is often mistaken as a Red Delicious but is clearly not. It is great for sauce, keeps well and makes for great snacks.

Pears are generally broken into two sub-groups-summer and winter. The leading pear in the summer group is the Bartlett discovered around 1770. People traditionally can this varietal due to their relatively quick ripening after picking. Winter pears include green and red anjou, bosc and comice pears. These are more likely to be a fresh choice to eat and take much more time to ripen and do so. The Northwest pear association says to check the neck for ripeness. (Yields to gentle pressure). We have a limited supply of red and green anjou that have been ripening ever so slowly over the last month and are oh so juicy. Especially the bosc. Their radiant golden color is a great indictator that they are ready to eat.

The GoldRush apple was developed in the 1990s through a joint breeding program between agricultural research stations in Indiana, Illinois, and New Jersey. The name "Gold Rush" refers to the apple's golden color and rich, spicy flavor. This apple variety is good for eating fresh and for baking. It keeps well for 7 months. We planted this variety a few years ago and really enjoy its flavor and crispness. It is a great improvement on one of its parents: Yellow Delicious.

Fall is on its way. Great selection of pears and apples. Every day subtle changes occur on the fall foliage. This photo doesn't do justice to the vibrant colors.
