This is wonderfully written and exactly how I feel ā¤ļø
The turkeys and chickens we processed today are currently resting in an ice bath. The tables and cutting boards are clean, the feathers and guts buried deep in the compost pile. There are bowls of organ meat in the fridge, and a tired crew relaxed around a bustling table with full bellies.
Itās probably the fact that Iām sharing with you today that has me feeling so reflective about it, but the truth is that days like today send me deep into my feelings. Food is so important to me. And food that nourishes community is a gift so rich that I, quite literally, have oriented my whole life around it.
We grow our own meat ānot because it is easy or even cost effectiveā but because I believe so strongly in the importance of planet and animal welfare, the unmatched nutrition of pastured and free range meats, and even the somber attachment to the lives that are lost to sustain our own.
We grow our own vegetables because I see the magic of a seed in the ground become a dish on the table. The unparalleled flavor of a carrot or tomato or melon picked at peak ripeness, traveling only the distance from the garden gate to my kitchen table.
I bake our bread and make our dairy (and, and, andā¦) because it just plain tastes better. Itās alive and itās real and it cannot be replicated on a grocery store shelf.
And then⦠the most beautiful part.
I set a plate before my children.
My spouse.
My neighbors.
I serve them a plateful of my love, my labor, and my time. The land and the livestock give to us in exchange for all we give to them and it is all so unbearable hard and beautiful and right.
Itās all about the food.
