The duckweed has regenerated even more densely than it was before the ducks’ first browsing! 🌱🦆

It’s been 48 hours, and it’s looking great! I’ll be putting the ducks back out there tomorrow, and maybe I’ll let them stay a little bit longer this time.

I’m really enjoying watching this little natural feeding experiment unfold! 💚

Well, that didn’t take long! 😂 The ducks managed to eat about half of the duckweed in just an hour.

Now comes the next test: how long will it take the duckweed to replenish? The hula hoop nursery should give me a pretty good idea of its growth rate and how quickly it can recover from being grazed.

I’m really curious to see how this little duckweed experiment plays out! 🦆🌱

Finally re-introducing the ducks to their big pond! 🦆🪿

The ducks and geese are clearly enjoying the deep, clean water, but they have yet to discover their duckweed. 😂

I’ll keep an eye on everyone—and on the duckweed—and once they’ve had a chance to enjoy some, I’ll herd them back inside before they manage to deplete it all on their very first day out!

🌱 Duckweed update!

I shot this video last week and completely forgot to post it—so there’s actually even more duckweed now! 😂

I’m so excited to finally see this taking off. It has taken much longer than I expected to really establish, but now it looks like it’s finally going for it!

I’m really hoping this little pond becomes a nice, natural source of forage for the ducks. 🦆💚

I’ve been carefully watching the big pond, keeping an eye out for the goldfish I planted back in July. Today I finally got a good look at a few of them—and they look like they’ve doubled in size! 🐟

I haven’t been feeding them anything, so they’re growing entirely from what the pond is naturally producing. That is very encouraging and tells me the pond is developing a healthy food base all on its own.

Now I’m researching channel catfish to add to the pond. I’m thinking a small number of good-sized fish rather than heavily stocking it, and I’ll be looking carefully at the best source and timing.

It’s exciting to see this pond starting to become its own little ecosystem! 🌿🐟

The breeding flock is settling into their new home nicely! 🐦❤️

I’ll keep them locked into the barn portion for a couple of weeks so they can really get comfortable and learn that this is home. Once they’re completely settled in, I’ll open up their outside run.

They won’t be free-ranging for at least a year, but I want them to know where they belong and, more importantly, that coming back inside is a safe and comfortable place. Hopefully, this will make the transition to their run nice and easy—and save me from chasing Guineas all over the farm later! 😂

This particular project started months ago with a brand-new cement floor. I about killed myself painting it—my shoulder may never be the same! 😂

But it’s FINALLY finished and in use with next year’s Guinea Fowl breeding flock! 🐦

I couldn’t be happier with how well it turned out. It was a lot of work, but seeing the flock settled in and enjoying their new home makes every aching muscle worth it. ❤️
