We are often asked “what do you do with the leftover vegetables after you close?” Since we can’t eat them all, some years we’ve had foster families come and pick all they want. The past two years volunteers from The Society of St. Andrew have “gleaned” the remaining produce. They’ve been out 4 times over the past two weeks. They pick the vegetables and then they gave them to First Presbyterian Church in DeLand’s food giveaway, a food bank in Orlando and another church in Orange City/ Deltona area. It’s not everyday you get to fill up a drop top Beamer like it’s a wheelbarrow!

Eagle 🦅 update: for over 20 years we’ve watched a pair of eagles nest in various pine trees on the farm. This morning one of the fledglings watched me work for about 2 hours then took to flying and calling. He flew over the lake, disappeared for about 3 minutes and then circled back and landed in the nest tree. At the same time a second eaglet crash landed in the field. He/she was eating what looked to be a fish. Then one of the parents flew back to the nest tree the with the eater following. Adult eagles soar. New flyers are far from majestic. It’s like watching a t-ball game and calling it baseball. It’s entertaining but not very organized. The parents will soon leave the offspring to fend for themselves. Traditionally they’ll hang around for a couple weeks or months then they too will eventually leave the area. The adults will return in late September to mate and rebuild the nest. The fledglings we’ll probably never see again.

The farm store will open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am-4pm and Sunday 12-4pm but with a very limited amount of citrus and vegetables. We are still trying to determine what survived the freeze. I suggest you give us two weeks before visiting again. We have plans to replant vegetables quickly once we determine what lives or dies. Farmer Steve

Freeze update Sunday Feb. 1
The vegetables look stunned. I think as much from the wind as the 24*. We do have a limited amount of citrus already picked to sell today and we’ll be making a reduced amount of orange juice. We’ll know more about the condition of the vegetables and citrus in the coming days and weeks. Time will tell.
