NEW SOD CARE Q&A: When can you mow for the first time?

It can be tempting to fire up the mower as soon as your new lawn starts looking a little tall, but give those roots time to get established first.

Before the first mow, gently tug on the sod. If it resists lifting, that’s a good sign the roots are beginning to anchor into the soil. You’ll also want the ground to be firm and dry enough that your mower won’t create ruts or shift the sod.

When it is time to mow, follow the ⅓ rule: never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at once.

A little patience with that first cut can help protect all the work happening underneath your new lawn.
