Now everyone realizes why we started raising Coturnix Quail! They can provide meat at 10 weeks and my flock is producing around 30 dozen eggs per week! Chicken and chicken eggs are getting hard to get and the price has rapidly increased as Bird flu ravages commercial flocks across the country. We make breakfast scrambles/burritos and freeze them with ham, bacon or sausage…potatoes,onion, spinach and red, yellow and green peppers with the quail eggs. Today we added another line of Coturnix Quail to our breeding program. These are Jumbo English White Coturnix Quail. They are absolutely calm, beautiful, meaty with good structure…very nice breeding specimens. Thank you Daria Ussary! 12 young hens just starting to lay and two young Roos! Excited to see how they grow out and produce. These quail must be vent s*xed as they cannot be feather s*xed so they must be a few weeks old before most can determine s*x.

My Dad always used to talk about the two types of people in the world…he said there are givers and takers… nothing wrong with either, but he said we needed to make sure we GAVE more than we take! So to make sure we are giving more than we are taking…we want to GIVE away… Yes FREE…16 dozen of Fresh Quail Eggs for eating. Coturnix Quail harvesting time…processed 10 Roos this morning and probably another 10 this afternoon.
At 10 weeks old they are full grown…I have selected the largest to keep as breeding stock, so these are the ones that didn’t meet the Jumbo size standard or didn’t have a good attitude. It’s good to know how our food is raised and what great care and nutrition they were given. They will provide healthy meals for our home! We are Blessed!

Hope to try something I know nothing about this weekend… lol! We want to start an Asparagus Bed. I understand the best time to start Asparagus is now because it takes about 3 years before it goes into full production where you can harvest comfortably. I have purchased a few crowns of Jersey Hybrid and Purple. To add a little variety. Supposedly the work is done mostly the first season in the planting/weeding & watering process …then it provides a nice harvest for the next 20 years! That sounds like a great investment to me! We shall see… we have tried a lot of things… some were awesome and some not so much! We will keep you posted!

Today we moved the chicks out of the heated barn and into the chicken coop with heat lamp. They liked the extra room and can go inside or outside. Still a few months before they produce eggs.

The more you know about how to provide nutritious food for yourself and family the more independent you become and less reliant on supply chain issues and shortages!
