Happy Tuesday! Apologies for the stock out. We have had to let inventory run out because of the way Amazon fulfills orders. They do not use oldest inventory first. This combined with their policy of pulling grocery items five weeks before the expiration date has resulted in many pounds of coffee being returned to us. So, we've decided to do more, smaller shipments. Fresh beans are roasting now and should be available by the end of the week!

Picking, part 3...Sorry for the multiple posts. I'm only able to put one video in a post. This shows the receiving process where the workers have their cherries measured. (The beans in the foreground are all green because this was the last pick of the season. Everything is picked at this time, but green beans are kept separate from the ripe cherries.)

Seed to cup post #2 is finally here...Picking!

After planting (and growing for a few years), the coffee cherries (the fruit that houses the bean) are picked. Most varieties have a dark red cherry when it's ready to be picked. Our coffee trees are hand picked and only the ripest cherries are picked. This means that each tree on the farm will be picked over several times during the picking season. It's more labor intensive, but ensures that the cherries get picked at the optimal time, which results in a better bean.

I had a chance to go pick for an hour and maybe picked enough for a pound of coffee. A good picker will net enough cherries in a day for 20-40 pounds. There are a couple of pictures below of coffee cherries on the tree as well as how little I managed to pick in one hour. (I have a couple of videos also, but am not able to upload them for some reason, so they will follow in the next post.)

Happy Monday! Apologies for the huge delay in posting about this, but here you go! This is the first in a series about the seed to cup journey your BrewBros beans go through on their way to your coffee cup.

The first step is planting. New plants are started in greenhouses from unprocessed beans (beans in parchment form) every year. Once the seedlings have grown to an appropriate size, they'll be planted throughout the farm. In any given year, 30,000 to 250,000 new coffee trees will be planted, depending on how many older trees have to be "retired". After planting, it takes three to four years before the plant will produce beans.

The photos below show new plants in seedling form as well as some older trees that are almost ready to be planted on the farm. All plants are grown organically on-site.
