Look carefully and you can spot our Popcorn among the many offerings Jake's Country Meats brings to farmers markets! Partnering with other great local businesses like Jake's allows us to get our popcorn to places beyond our local area, like this market in Chicago.
They're not our only partner doing so - you can also find our popcorn with Nelson's Herbs at the Goshen Farmers Market!

The popcorn plants are up and off to a great start! They've got a lot of growing to do, so we have our fingers crossed that the weather cooperates and we end up with a great crop.

As we were working on a business plan for selling our popcorn last year, we spent a lot of time researching other small businesses selling packaged foods that had seen success and been able to scale. One that really impressed and inspired us was Great Lakes Potato Chip. Go to the "Our Story" page on their website, and you'll see that they started small (with just 1,500 pounds of potatoes, transported by pickup truck) and have seen incredible growth from their origin just over 15 years ago.
While they have chips in bigger regional stores such as Meijer, what's coolest to us is the sheer volume of small, local establishments they're in. Stop at almost any farm store or gourmet grocer (I got these at Terrill's Market), and they're prominently displayed. And it's not just because they have a great chip - its also their recognizable, Michigan first branding.

We're slinging popcorn kernels, not potato chips, but its still cool to see a fellow business start from the ground up and have significant regional impact. Maybe one day, we'll be a local staple too!

We've recently talked with some friends about their experience with our Popping Ears, and they had a few great suggestions we'd like to bring to everyone's attention!
First off - Microwave time. It's really hard to determine an exact time to recommend, because every microwave can cook differently. My older model finishes up a Mini Ear in around two minutes, but we've heard that others get better results at 90 seconds. Given the variability in microwaves and individual ears, the best bet is to listen for the popping to slow, then remove from the microwave immediately! If you let the microwave continue as popping stops, the popcorn absolutely will burn and lets be honest... burnt popcorn is worse than no popcorn at all.
We've also been told that people are having improved results when they add butter or oil to the bag prior to popping their ear. This can actually help more kernels pop and of course results in a great flavor.

Unfortunately, there's only so much room for instructions on our bags, but we do plan to make some changes prior to our next label order, including widening the popping time range and suggesting the addition of a butter or oil. We do have detailed popping instructions on our website's Popping Guide page, which we hope will be helpful - and as always, feel free to reach out with any specific questions!
