As we were working on a business plan for selling our popcorn last year, we spent a lot of time researching other small businesses selling packaged foods that had seen success and been able to scale. One that really impressed and inspired us was Great Lakes Potato Chip. Go to the "Our Story" page on their website, and you'll see that they started small (with just 1,500 pounds of potatoes, transported by pickup truck) and have seen incredible growth from their origin just over 15 years ago.
While they have chips in bigger regional stores such as Meijer, what's coolest to us is the sheer volume of small, local establishments they're in. Stop at almost any farm store or gourmet grocer (I got these at Terrill's Market), and they're prominently displayed. And it's not just because they have a great chip - its also their recognizable, Michigan first branding.
We're slinging popcorn kernels, not potato chips, but its still cool to see a fellow business start from the ground up and have significant regional impact. Maybe one day, we'll be a local staple too!
