Rain Song Farm - Texas We produce a variety of sustainably grown veggies, fruits, & herbs on a small (large backyard) farm in Decker Prairie, TX.

We grow our food following organic growing practices, with no man-made synthetic fertilizers or pesticides used in the process. Rain Song Farm produces a variety of sustainably-grown fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs. The farm is owned and operated by Ed Naspinski, and is located in Decker Prairie, TX, 10 minutes north of Tomball. Our produce is available at the Tomball Farmer's Market every Sat

It's time to w**d and fertilize the blueberry beds to have lots of blueberries next year!

Now that the production season is over, late Jul / early Aug is a great time to w**d the blueberries, add some organic soil acidifier, add fertilizer cover with a thin layer of peat moss, then mulch with wood chips.

During the hot summer months, it's important to water them every day (I actually water this bed twice a day in July/Aug/Sep). If the blueberry plants are getting regular watering, after the steps above, you can ignore them until it's time to start harvesting next spring!

Early August tour of the largest raised row garden on the farm. It always amazes me how lush the gardens still look when daytime temps are in the mid- to upper-90’s (as long as we’re growing plants that are in-season).

Late July and early August cleanup and prep for Fall crops continues. I'll be transplanting fall tomatoes next week, and direct sowing the first fall radishes, French filet beans, and start some fall greens indoors.

Although there is usually small fig production through the Fall, the major season is nearly over. For comparison, I've harvested 25 ish lbs of figs this week versus 75-80 lbs last week. While I still have plenty of figs, I tried a new recipe, inspired by a FB post.

Early next week, I'll finish side-dressing the freshly prepared rows, then start transplanting tomatoes.

If you are looking for figs, mid-July is the peak of the season in this part of Houston. I'll have 30-35+ lbs of figs on Saturday at the Tomball Farmers Market. I only have 9 fig trees, but when they produce, do they ever!

I'll also have lots of hot peppers, including Scotch bonnet peppers grown from Jamaica MOA certified seeds.

Happy July 4th!

As spring tomato season is winding down, I've started removing tomato plants from the gardens. I posted a 15x sped-up video on IG of removing one row of tomatoes. Meanwhile, a few days ago, I started seeds for fall tomatoes.

Even though I'm still succession planting cucumbers, okra, and long beans, July is typically when I start cleaning up the gardens to get ready for fall crops. Here are some pics of the process.

If you are on IG, I posted a few reels this week of the fig trees and of harvesting habanada peppers.

Here are some pics of the harvest this week, which includes a LOT of sweet and no-heat peppers. I also harvested about 15 lbs of mild heat to super-hot peppers this afternoon, not included in the pics.

I feel like this year's spring tomato season was very short. I didn't eat nearly enough caprese salads or tomato sandwiches using our "reject" tomatoes.

One of the last things I do on Friday afternoon to get ready for the Tomball Farmers Market is to sort every tomato by hand and weigh them.

If you’re looking for only a few or a lot of heirloom tomatoes, this is the weekend I will have a lot available.

Late June is typically the peak of our spring tomato season, then it drops off quickly. The drop off in production is more pronounced for the thin-skinned flavorful heirloom varieties that I grow.

The 1st pic is about 150 lbs of heirloom slicing, Roma, and cherry tomatoes after sorting, ready to load on the truck in the morning. The 2nd pic is some of the cherry tomato rejects. They might look good in the pic, but the rejects all had some blemish or spot that didn’t pass my test. lol. I had already tossed about 40 lbs of heirloom and paste rejects on the compost pile before sorting the cherries.

The usual pics of the gardens and some of this week's harvests.

Hot pepper season is starting. Besides the usual jalapenos and serranos, I have about 9 lbs of medium heat to super hot peppers this week. It won't be long before I'm overrun with hot peppers... LOL!

I'm guessing that I have 100 to 120 lbs of heirlooms slicing tomatoes ripening in the back bedroom of the farmhouse for the market this Saturday, so if you're looking for a nice variety of heirlooms, the next 2 weekends are likely the peak of the season.
