We produce a variety of sustainably grown veggies, fruits, & herbs on a small (large backyard) farm in Decker Prairie, TX.

We grow our food following organic growing practices, with no man-made synthetic fertilizers or pesticides used in the process. Rain Song Farm produces a variety of sustainably-grown fresh vegetables, fruits, and herbs. The farm is owned and operated by Ed Naspinski, and is located in Decker Prairie, TX, 10 minutes north of Tomball. Our produce is available at the Tomball Farmer's Market every Saturday. The rain has been welcome on our farm! Now that the weather is cooler (not 100+ during the day anymore), I'll start transplanting fall crops into the ground, and will plant the first (of many) succession planting(s) of carrots.

Some pics from the farm this week. Looking forward to some cooler weather so I can start planting some cooler weather plants like kale, collards, broccoli, etc.

In the meantime, late summer means lots of okra, cucumbers, eggplants, and long beans... LOL!

The heat loving plants like okra, long beans, longevity spinach, tindora, and roselles are looking lush, despite daytime temps near or above 100 deg F (it's August, so not unexpected... LOL).

I've still been using the time to clean up the gardens to get ready for Fall crops. Most of my indoor grow racks are filled with transplants started from seed, just waiting for cooler weather before transplanting.

Because the daytime temps are still so high, I'll likely have to replant a row of bush beans and the Fall sugar snap peas... we are at the mercy of the weather. :-)

Mid-August is typically when I plant the last few rows of cucumbers of the season. Some years, it will be okay to plant later, but on average, if planting much beyond mid Aug, many of the plants won't produce before nights get too cool late October.

I've got 3 rows ready for a mix of seedless and pickling cucumbers. If you follow my planting guide for this area (free to print or download from my website), you'll see it's time to start seeds (indoors) for the first of the cool season herbs (cilantro, parsley, dill). These should be ready for transplant in mid-Sept when we (hopefully) get our first cool front of the season!

It's time to w**d and fertilize the blueberry beds to have lots of blueberries next year!

Now that the production season is over, late Jul / early Aug is a great time to w**d the blueberries, add some organic soil acidifier, add fertilizer cover with a thin layer of peat moss, then mulch with wood chips.

During the hot summer months, it's important to water them every day (I actually water this bed twice a day in July/Aug/Sep). If the blueberry plants are getting regular watering, after the steps above, you can ignore them until it's time to start harvesting next spring!

Early August tour of the largest raised row garden on the farm. It always amazes me how lush the gardens still look when daytime temps are in the mid- to upper-90’s (as long as we’re growing plants that are in-season).
