Unpopular opinion: when you’re buying milk and beef from the grocery store, you’re buying from a family. I love the idea of buying local, direct-to-consumer products, but that’s not a realistic option for everyone. So if you bought a gallon of milk from the grocery store today. Congratulations! 🎉 You still supported a FAMILY! Because real people with real lives, and real struggles, and real families take care of those cows. In fact, most of the milk you buy from the grocery store IS in fact local! While not all beef you buy from the grocery store comes from family operations, MANY family ranches do sell to the commodity market, which ends up at the grocery store. So it’s ok. You fed your family. You’re doing great. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

You know what’s crazy to think about? We’re farmers and ranchers, and we STILL need farmers. We don’t grow everything we need to eat, and much of what we feed our cattle to sustain them comes from other farmers as well (such as the sugarbeet shreds we often include in our cattle feed).

Only about 1.5% of the population works in production agriculture, and that number has been declining for decades. As much as we love farming, it is HARD, so if you’re still here, THANK YOU!!!
