Such a sweet and happy accident, this Aquarian lamb! It turns out that i didn't get a couple ram lambs separated from the flock soon enough last fall, and so we'll have a batch of lambs this week. It's a pretty great week to be born, if you have to be born in February, with mild and sunny days, and this will mean that a bunch of lambs will get a head start growing even before we head out to pasture. Maybe an accident, but nothing to complain about!
Meanwhile, vegetable farming at the moment looks like spreadsheets and emails, packing weekly orders for the and , encouraging local folks to sign up for our CSA program (link in bio!), and doing our best to rest, eat good food, and support our community near and far in resisting fascism and building more connected and caring ways of being.

The cats and i took turns posing with the Khersonskaya squash that we're growing for seed! Who's the cutest?

I baked one of these squash for farm lunch the other day. It tasted so good and sweet! And, we put away 6 quarts of leftovers, so it's still feeding us!

If you live locally, want to feel secure in your access to carbohydrates, and are willing to get the seeds back to us once you scoop them out, please get in touch! We'll be delighted to bring you as much squash as you can handle.

The harvest is rolling in, from the fields into storage and off to market via our humble hands! This week of first frost saw all the squash make it unto the house, half of the carrots dug, incredibly massive daikon radishes popping out of the ground, and peppers upon peppers stacked to the ceiling! This world is abundant!
Maybe you'd like to partake in the abundance with us via a winter CSA share! We'll be curating a selection of vegetables for our members at each indoor market (11/9, 11/23, 12/7, 12/21) and we'd love to send some home with you! Sign up at humblehandsharvest.com/csa :)

We took a walk through the orchard today, looking for apples that were ripe. We found a few! And also were surprised & delighted by a couple goldfinch nests. And a very silly small tree with more fruit than leaves!

Y'all. Tanhead had quadruplet lambs last week! It took us a couple days to believe it, but its real. She's taking good care of them all! She's one of our oldest ewes, born in 2017, and her experience as a mom is making raising quads look easy.
Check out the size comparison between a quadruplet and a lamb born 3 weeks earlier, with fewer siblings. 😂
Also cute pic of Hannah with pepper and her triplets. Lamb time is the best time!

Spring vibes here on the farm! We're excited to share some of that energy with you Saturday morning, 9-noon, at the Decorah farmers market!
Who can guess what plants are flowering in pics 2 & 3? One of them is a seed crop!
We've had one set of lambs every day since Tuesday, and they've all come during the workday which is convenient! Any brilliant ideas out there for a naming convention? Thoughts so far are to name them after types of cookies, or stars/constellations.

We've had a habit of hosting a gathering at sunrise on Easter morning--this was Hannah's tenth year of celebrating in that way, right here! A couple dozen folks gathered around a fire in the north field, under a pink sky. We heard meadowlarks and barred owls, saw a trio of geese fly into the dawn, and after a while decided that, yes, in fact, the sun was risen, albeit behind a cloud.
The props made for an unusual wheelbarrow load: a trombone for making a joyful noise, some Gregorian chant, and a hymnal in case lyrics were needed (they weren't, we mostly shared Mary Oliver poems). It's a beautiful thing to gather with people so early in the day, to take a little of the load off of the rooster who believes the sunrise depends on him.
Another beautiful thing is when 3 out of 8 people at a potluck picnic table whip out binoculars for an interesting bird. Nerds.
Happy spring, may we all find ways to celebrate newness in the world!

It's real! Spinach is coming in strong in the high tunnel, with more light (we're closer to the spring equinox than to the winter solstice now!) and this generally very warm winter. You can access it on the online market, today through Wednesday!

Happy snow day! I took a break from taxes this afternoon to get some sledding in, and took advantage of the burn break I mowed in June for the burn (+ native seed planting!) that has yet to happen (delayed till spring 2024 due to drought). Really wild that even with 5 more months of growing season and after a foot of snow you can still tell where the mowed strip is. This year was so dry... Which makes this snowfall extra exciting, sledding or no!

Happy New Year, friends! Wishing you joy and connection and strength, this year and always.
