Happy Camper Homestead

Happy Camper Homestead Hey there! We're Marc & Jenn. Just two people who love the homestead lifestyle

It's been quite a while since I posted anything personal but I feel a strong need to sing praise and even brag a little about my wife Jenn. The past couple months it's been go go go! for both of us and we've been killing it. Between or normal jobs and projects at home, we each have a full schedule. I found myself getting overwhelmed with not enough time to stay on top of maintenance chores with these added projects I set out to do. Jenn saw this and took an entire work day off work and started going down my list!? Keep in mind this is a list that has been growing for three weeks and I finally wrote it all down. Most were not small tasks but she took the initiative anyway to get them done and it gave me such a nice break that evening when I got home.
Another amazing thing is; she did all of this while I wasn't communicating well or even being a great partner myself. Like so many other moments it makes me question if I deserve her and the happiness she brings to my life.
I am so grateful to have such a dedicated and loving wife that lifts me up when I get down. I love her so much! She always lets me feel like the greenest grass is growing beneath my feet.

Spring has officially sprung on the homestead, now that our garlic has made an appearance šŸ˜ Hardneck garlic is great because you get two harvests. Once from the garlic scape and then a month or so later, you get the actual garlic.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to get to know your neighbors, especially in a rural area. Being able to give each other a heads up and being there when we need each other keeps everyone out here safe. Big kitty video sent to us this morning from our nearest neighbor.

The hard reality of homesteading is having to say goodbye to animals you’ve grown to love. We raise an abundance of chickens. Some for breeding purposes, some for eggs. Because we have so many, we don’t develop a bond with every single one. They’re all spoiled and healthy, but the bonding seems to come more natural with the chickens who stand out with their unique personalities. And Gypsy was definitely one of a kind. Our first escape artist, who taught the others where the one weak spot in the fence was. Our loudest girl, who’d complain about the lack of treats outside the run she just escaped from…and would lead a march to our front door to demand food. She befriended our local doe, Serenity and caused as much mayhem as possible with her buddy Appa. RIP Gypsy girl. Thank you for the years of entertainment and eggs šŸ’•

You guys…things are getting out of control. The other day we found volunteer corn, potatoes and sunflowers in our old garden area. Those random finds made sense.

But yesterday we found peas. In the dog run. Nowhere near where we had them planted last year 🤣🤣🤣 And I know these came from last year’s seeds because it’s a variety we grew last year and aren’t growing this year.

Birds. It has to be birds šŸ¤”

You want to know what my favorite type of garden is? The type that starts itself!!! I mean…I love all gardening. But there’s just something special about plants that decide to pop up in unexpected places. We have sunflowers and corn (thanks to the birds) as well as potatoes. Apparently we missed some when we harvested last year lol

First official harvest of the year. Garlic scapes 🤤 What’s your favorite way to cook them?

Thankfully, Marc and I covered all the sensitive plants before going to bed last night. Woke up to frost. Sometimes living in the snow belt has its perks (less people, more nature) and sometimes it’s just cooooold 🄶
