Recently we sat down with Winemaker Reid Griggs to talk about how important grape vine clones are to him.

“Site always trumps clones,” he told us, pointing out that even the sites a clone has lived in have changed that clone genetically, reflecting “The collective history of what that material has been through,” he said.

Our Winemaker Reid Griggs explains why it's so important for him, as a winemaker, to make the call on a final pick date for each block in a vineyard. A wine is a sum of a long chain of decisions, and it's critical that he be involved in the most important one.

As practitioners of biodynamic farming, we read Kathleen Willcox's recent article "Can Organic and Biodynamic Farming Actually Improve Yields?" in Wine Enthusiast with sincere interest. We loved hearing our own Reid Griggs getting to the heart of the matter, talking about why living soils are so essential:

“Every soil’s microbial fingerprint is unique,” Griggs says. “These communities are capable of transforming the fruit, and they help encourage a thriving ecosystem, starting with the soil.”

Luminary Harvest Weekend Day 2 will bring something special to Burgess: A "Magnum Decades Tasting," on Friday September 4th.

First planted in the 1880s by Swiss-Italian immigrants, Sorenson Vineyard has been the beating heart of Burgess for more than 150 years. Winemaker Reid Griggs and Master Sommelier Carlton McCoy will lead a tasting and discussion about 10 older vintages from this iconic vineyard across 5 decades, all served from Magnum and larger bottles: the optimum sizes for long-term aging.

The vines in Sorenson Vineyard are actively growing as the vines soak up the sun after the rain. Bloom is underway!

Full of Sorenson Vineyard’s deep, vibrant blackberry flavors, plus notes of black cherry, forest floor and mushroom, the 2002 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is perfectly mature today. It shows a great harmony between the fruity exuberance of youth and the earthy secondary notes peeking through its bottle bouquet.

Next week, we’re honored to rerelease a limited amount of our 2002 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon as part of our From The Vault series.

We're so honored that Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW was as excited by the 2023 Quartz Creek Cabernet Sauvignon as we are, awarding it 96 points recently in The Wine Palate:

"Deep garnet-purple colored, [it] comes bounding out with energetic notes of wild blueberries, black currant jelly, and ripe plums, leading to hints of mint tea, crushed rocks, and lavender oil."

Just one taste of this wine—released this week—and it's clear to see that the hype around 2023 is justified.

We designed The Burgess Founder’s Experience to transport you to another time.

Wine lovers tasting in a midcentury speakeasy hidden behind a bookcase. 2022 Cabernet Sauvignons with a delicacy and grace that puts them in perfect company with their brethren from the 1980s and 1990s poured at the end of the flight.

It’s an experience that shows our commitment to classically styled wines and unpretentious elegance. To make your reservation this season, simply email [email protected].

2022 was a superb vintage for Burgess. We achieved excellent phenolic ripeness in the Chardonnay destined for our 2022 Sparkling Blanc de Blanc. With one year in neutral oak, six months in stainless steel, and 18 months en tirage, everything came together: bright citric flavors, toasty lees, and honeycrisp apple on the palate. The result is absolutely intoxicating and inviting.

Our members will receive their allocation of this carefully sculpted Napa Valley Sparkling wine this April.

For years, Carlton McCoy, Master Sommelier and CEO of Burgess, has dreamed of a new kind of wine gathering.

He envisioned one small group of wine lovers, coming together to enjoy an evening of food, wine, and conversation—and hopefully newfound friendships.

It’s the kind of wine dinner that happens in winemakers’ kitchens every Saturday night up and down Napa Valley: A dinner party for 24, complete with vintages old and new, accompanied by an exquisitely prepared, family-style dinner with freshest ingredients. We call it Table 24.

Carlton, an accomplished, CIA-trained chef, will be personally cooking for you for our kickoff dinner at Burgess on Saturday, April 25. To learn more, email [email protected].
