Traditionally, to meet customer demand for beef, we have purchased feeder cattle, (just weaned calves that are approximately one year old) from ranchers that we know and trust to add to our own herd that we birth here at Tvf. We then raise them as one big herd regeneratively on our land.

We have been working on a long range plan to increase our own herd of mamas so that we raise nothing but our own cattle, but every heifer (young unbred female) that we add to the mama heard is one less that we can raise for you, our customer. So, this is indeed a long process. However, the economics of the beef market are making the supply of feeder cattle much more difficult to obtain and at much higher prices.

When a rancher contacted us about selling a large portion of his mama herd, we saw an opportunity to accelerate our plan to birth and raise all our own cattle. This is a significant investment, but one that makes sense given that our goal is to meet your demand for beef, raised the way we do without compromise and control each step along the way.

A few weeks ago, we drove to upstate New York to pick up 22 mamas, many of which have calves with them, some of which are currently pregnant. (Read all about the trip in our latest newsletter.) We are excited to welcome these ladies into the growing herd. Removing variables that could compromise quality and our commitment to you will always be a priority. Thank you for partnering with us as we seek to bring you real food raised right.

If you recall, in March one of our overly mobile coops got wrapped around a tree during a storm. This week we started to build the replacement. It looked like a giant erector set when we got it, but without the instruction manual. Luckily, we have some experience and some new intern muscle. We plan to finish it this week and get three flocks in the fields soon.

This spring has been so different from last year. The warm temperatures we’ve had this April caused the grass in our pastures to explode in growth. This is a blessing, considering last spring was so wet. It seemed like we would never have animals on grass out of fear for ruining our fields. This abundant growth though has had presented us with new challenges. We have to figure out how to graze fast enough to keep the grass in the state of growth. Thankfully, we have cattle and sheep to do this work for us.

This year we are running that group together in one single Flerd (flock + herd). Our group of about 30 finishing cattle is grazing with our flock of sheep and lambs as one unit. There are multiple benefits of doing it in this way. First, the flerd size and land sizing balances very nicely so that once this group leaves the pasture, it will be at least 30 days until they’re back on that same piece of grass. The rest allows the roots to grow and establish more grasses for them to eat the next time around. Another big benefit of this type of grazing comes from having a heavy concentration of hooves in a small area. This creates what is called a herd effect. This pressure stimulates different types of grasses to fill in the gaps between all the plants and increases the diversity of plants, species and pasture. This helps our pastures rebound and build the resilience necessary for a long year of grazing.

Finally, we can now do one single move per day for this combined group instead of two. As we’ve mentioned before, we increased our poultry flocks this year. It’s still only April and we currently have about 3500 broilers and 1800 egg layer chickens and five different flocks total. If we can simplify the work and increase the quality of these soils and animals on it, that’s a big win. It’s easy to stand in awe of this process. What an incredible design that animals can consume some of the fastest growing plants and turn them into manure and greater fertility for future health in life. It’s a gift that we get to see unwrapped each day.
