We have a new addition! We woke up to this sweet bull calf nursing on mama this morning. He looks to be a beautiful silver color, and since he was born in the Smokey Mountains, we decided to name him Smokey! Our very FIRST Scottish Highland calf that was born here at JL Heritage Farms. 🥰

We are headed home with this sweet boy. Surgery was a huge success and ended up being shorter and easier than they thought! His BPS was on the outside of the lung, so they were able to take it right out without messing with his lungs. So thankful. God is so good! 🤍

Second year of Homeschooling for these kiddos🏡

Super proud of this bunch, they got their morning chores finished (inside and outside) all in time for school to start 💜

We now have an 8th grader, 6th grader, 6th grader and 4th grader!

And then our two little rascals who will be mama’s helpers today.

👋🏻 We’ve had quite a few changes around the farm over the last couple of months!

•We are raising some Jacob’s sheep (who don’t really let us get super close yet)

•We got our Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs back (they stayed with Josh’s brother while we made a bigger pen for them) & we now have a very pregnant Duroc pig who is due any day now. 🐷

•Our chickens are finally starting to lay, but unfortunately we lost several chickens to a mink or weasel attack. 😞

Homeschool for our kids also start next week! 📚 Wish us luck!

I’ll try and snag some good pictures of the sheep soon. 🐑

Also pictured is our very sweet Kaylee and Krystal highland heifers who love to hang out in the pond, and need a really good brushing. Sweetest girls ever! 💜

Far from finished with the spaghetti sauce, and still need to do tomato juice, green beans & some jam. The house sure smelled glorious while the sauce was cooking 🥰

This is the first year I used 1/2 gallon jars for some of my sauce. Since we have a large family, I figured 1/2 gallon would be more efficient than quart jars. 😆

So much more to do! 🙃

My plans today:
•canning spaghetti sauce
•refrigerator pickles

Unfortunately I forgot an ingredient for the spaghetti sauce. 🤦🏼‍♀️ So pickles it was. (And then the girls decided to make a cake, *happy dance*)

I only started learning about food preservation several years ago, so I think it’s a great for kids to learn. I wish I would’ve learned it sooner than I did, especially right now with the world we live in. So since we couldn’t do the spaghetti sauce today, the girls learned how to make refrigerator pickles, which they quickly got tired of😅.

My goal this week is to knock out spaghetti sauce, tomato juice *soup weather will be here soon enough!* and green beans, Lord willing. I’m excited for the girls to learn, even if they aren’t excited about it. 😆

Having a family milk cow has been quite the learning curve. Our first milking session was a disaster, and overwhelmed us quite a bit. The next day, we learned from our mistakes and it was a breeze! We’ve been getting 2-3 gallons of milk a day (we are milk sharing with a calf, so we only milk once a day). We absolutely love this, and so do the kids. So far, we’ve only made butter with the cream and it was delicious. If anyone has tips, tricks or recipes, send them our way! 🐄
