Let me let you in on a secret - even as a small biz owner, I don’t love shopping or gift giving/receiving. I struggle with our over-consuming lifestyle and I really prefer simplicity. This may seem counter intuited as a small biz owner who should be encouraging you to “shop” to “support” my biz. And maybe this is why I was drawn to starting my handouts candle biz in the first place. Luckily, many of my friends and family are thrilled to receive one of my candles as a gift. I personally love that they’re handmade. Even as a young girl, I’ve loved crafts and handmade gifts. Since my son was born, I’ve embraced this even more with handmade cards featuring painted footprints and more.

While you don’t need my permission, consider it granted. Heres your reminder to focus more on meaning and less on consumption if that’s what is on your heart this season.

Buckingham Avenue has always been a creative outlet for me. We are often complimented on our branding and I am so appreciative of that. One of my favorite parts of starting this business was coming up with pretty labels, designing the website and then planning fragrances/candle names that truly felt aligned with our brand where we prioritize family, simplicity & nature.

But a creative outlet doesn’t have to be a business. It’s SO important to have fun hobbies when finding joy & fulfillment.

Looking for a new hobby? Ask yourself, what items do you like to buy/enjoy and could you make it yourself? Ideas include, bread, baked goods, knitted accessories like hats, soaps, candles & more!

Are you looking for clarity & more joy in life! I’ve got a tool for you! ✨👇🏻

Journaling has been a tool to help me dream big. When I reflect on the last 5 years I’m amazed at how much has changed (in October 2019 - I had just left my job in engineering where I commuted so far and felt stuck to pursue the very unheard of path of remote work in the engineering industry). So much of it started by getting clarity on what was working and what wasn’t working on a day to day basis.

Let’s do an audit on what’s working for you now by answering these three questions:

1. When did I feel energized today? (What activities did I enjoy or when I was I in a flow state, etc)

2. What drained my energy today? (Did your commute leave you exhausted

3. What am I grateful for today?

Reflect on these questions. Maybe even consider them for the next month. Then go back and read what you wrote. You may be surprised at what trends you notice that could lead to tiny or big shifts in your life 🤍

Save these journal prompts for later when you need inspiration and share this post with a friend who would enjoy them too! 💌

Buckingham Avenue Behind the Biz ✨

I love dreaming big & most of my goals are related to living a fulfilling life. Sometimes money and income can be a taboo topic, but I view money as a tool to help you live your best life.

What would you do with a little bit of extra income? The average raise is 3% but can also increase from 5-10% depending on performance. So if you currently make $50,000 at your job, your raise could be $1,500 on average or $5,000 on a good year. If you currently make $100,000 then you’re looking at $3,000 to $10,000 as a very high raise. But what does it take? Do you need to stay late at the office? Does your 40 hour work week turn into 50 hours? How open is your boss to having these conversations?

I believe that having a good paying corporate job that you enjoy is truly a blessing. I am so lucky to consider myself to be in that group.

But maybe you have big dreams (like buying a second property like we did) and you’d love to be able to contribute financially to that goal. I like to encourage people to consider starting a side business. When you run the numbers, it’s EASY to start and grow a profitable side business to exceed the maybe $5,000 that you’d be begging for in a raise. And you don’t need to have a big conversation with your boss.

Bonus beyond income - starting your own side business is a way to provide extra fullfillment in your life. It is so satisfying to turn a hobby or passion project into a successful side biz. And when you remove the pressure to turn a side biz into a full time job, and you embrace it for what it is: an opportunity to find fullfillment and make some extra income - it becomes fun!

Another bonus - as you grow your business, you will also grow so much as a person. Chances are you will be BETTER at your corporate job because you’re learning new things and growing in your confidence. I know I’m so much better in my corporate role because I have an understanding of business from what I learned with my small business. And this is so valuable!

I can’t believe it’s been 4 years since we launched Buckingham Avenue in October 2020. I’m so thankful for everyone who has followed along with this journey. We’ve created such a fun community & I’m so thankful for how much I’ve grown and evolved personally & in this small biz. 🤍 cheers to chasing your dreams!

small biz tip ✨ tastefully market your business whenever you can! 🏷️

We love connecting with customers who say “I bought your candle at this cute store” or “I received one of your candles as a gift and knew I had to come back for more!” As Buckingham Avenue grew, I began creating more custom orders and seeing my candles in more cute small shops throughout Minnesota and the US. I love encouraging customers to shop at my favorite stores to see the inventory in person. But I’m also very intentional about including my website on my products so customers can find my website and learn more about my business, but I do this without detracting from my packaging, labels and brand. I’ve created many loyal customers who may have been traveling or purchased a candle when passing through a gift shop who found their way to my shop, and you can too!

If you have a product based business, here are a few ideas to tastefully market your business while seeing your product in other shops:
•add a sticker to the bottom of your product with your website and info - this is a discrete way to market without detracting from your branding
•add a cute tag on your product - this is a great place for wholesale vendors to add a pride sticker but it also allows you to include your story and some info about your business
•created a branded visible sticker - when I create custom candles that don’t include my traditional label and branding, I include an additional label that includes my branding but doesn’t take away from the customization I’ve created for the customer (such as a sticker on the lid)

Did you know that your sense of smell is closely linked with memory? The scents of our line of hand poured soy candles were thoughtfully created to instill a sense of nostalgia and provoke some of your favorite memories. Inspired by nature, Into the Woods is one of my favorite outdoor scents. With a combination of cypress and bayberry, I love bringing the scent of the outdoors inside.
