🍇August Grape Update: After the disastrous April frost event, there is a glimmer of hope for Three Fox fruit this year. Seyval Blanc, Vidal Blanc, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc all appear to be producing and should generate some really interesting fruit.
This further underlines the climate challenges we face in Virginia and the need for growers in the Mid-Atlantic to take a closer look at incorporating hybrid vines as a sustainable way to produce top-quality wine.
The vineyard is very healthy, thanks to the warm, dry conditions, which have resulted in very little disease or pest pressure. The secondary fruit we are producing is significantly heavier than in previous years, and most of the fruit is forming in smaller, tighter clusters.
Due to the delayed start to the season, we expect maturity—and therefore harvest—to occur about a month later than usual (weather permitting). This delay also gives us the opportunity to try new strategies for picking at optimal ripeness and to explore different approaches for producing a smaller, more hands-on harvest.
Our goal for the remainder of the season is simple: harvest only the highest-quality fruit while keeping the vineyard as healthy as possible for the 2027 season.
