The first measurable snow means it’s time to feed the first bales of hay of the year! We stockpile pastures throughout the fall to allow the cattle to still graze on grown grass in early winter, which is why we are just now having to feed hay. 🐮

We have now installed 2 new cattle guards for our ATV’s and UTV’s, out of 8 that we have planned. The next step is to add gravel and partial side railing to complete each one. These will be installed in all cross-fences to allow us to check cattle more frequently and conveniently, especially during our calving seasons when this is constant.

If you’ve never seen how it’s done, check out this video of our discbine in action over the past couple days! More videos to come of the whole hay making process 🌾

It’s that time for these calves! Now being 7 months old, it is now time for them to be weaned off their mothers. These tags allow the calf to remain with the mother without being able to nurse. The calves will be weaned off the milk without having separation anxiety at the same time. After 5 days, these tags will be removed and the calves will then be separated. By using these tags there is very little pacing and bawling, much less stress, and no weight loss!

And it’s official! Beginning this month, we will begin our 3 year $300,000 conservation project. This project includes fencing off all springs, streams, and ponds along with nearly all woods. In addition, a well and 9 water troughs will be installed throughout the property along with specialized waterway crossings.

Five of our nine new concrete water troughs have arrived! Weighing in at 5,300 pounds each, it takes a couple machines to unload them. These will provide water to the cattle once we fence off the streams for our water conservation project starting in the next couple weeks!
