Nature really can be a bitch sometimes. My first attempt at hatching the notoriously finicky Sebastopol goose eggs started out promising… Started with 5 and 3 were looking really good. Then the third stopped for whatever reason and the remaining 2 had fantastic veins and movement up until the day or so before lockdown.

Our solo gosling is a day old and I was pretty positive the second egg was not going to hatch. I opened it up to find a beautiful baby all positioned to hatch but it definitely had died for some reason. No idea why or what happened but I’m super bummed it made it so far all for nothing.

I didn’t have the heart or stomach to open the quail eggs to see why they didn’t hatch but I poured so much time and effort into these goose eggs — Hand turning 3x a day, cooling and misting — so I needed to see what happened for my own peace of mind. Not sure if I could have done something different but I guess we’ll never know.
